Photo shows what I mean. The 'cine film edging' only gets applied to landscape orientated icons. It does not get applied to portrait orientated icons. I can see that adding the edging to portrait icons would 'cut-into' the icon image but why doesn't Windows add the edging to the outside of the icon image or alternatively, not show it at all even on the landscape orientated icons?

I use VLC media player but I do not think this is relevant. I think it is a Windows/File Explorer thing. Maybe a legacy from long ago that isn't worth correcting.

Just wondered if others see the same behaviour? Not a serious issue. Just curious.

I think you will find that it depends on the videos orientation. Videos in landscape mode display as shown in the lower image while videos in portrait mode are shown as in the upper image.

Other than changing the video orientation by editing and rotating the video one way or another, I don't think there is much you can do about it.

Probably VLC considers the horizontal video as movie while the vertical video as mobile video and makes this distinction. You could try adding black bars left-right of the vertical video (letter-boxing) to make the horizontal dimension equal or larger than the vertical, but these bars will always be there and could be annoying.

I am not prepared to tweak anything over such a small detail. I was just curious if others see the same difference between landscape and portrait icons.

No problem. I'll call it 'Solved'.

I haven't any vertical videos, so I haven't seen that.

For some reason, Windows is incapable of creating an icon frame, (from within the Shell ExplorerFrame), for video files when the width of the aspect ratio is less than the height.
Best thing is:
1. Don't shoot video in Portrait Mode ;-), or,
2. Convert the video to a common aspect ratio. However, many players, not all, will render the file in the converted/fattened ratio!!!
