File Preview blocked after update

Hi All,

I hope I put this in the right forum.

It appears that with a recent Windows Update, the file previewer in Files Explorer is automatically blocked. I found the "unblock" method to work. However, in that case just opening the file is faster probably. I notice that it mainly appears to block PDF files. I also tried the method of adding the site to trusted sites for after that file is downloaded. The issue still persists.

Anyone possible way to remove part of a Windows Update? I know that sounds crazy and possible security issue, however I don't see another way to get past this.

Thoughts appreciated.

yeah this works, but here are the other threads related to this topic. you cant remove part of the update, but you can allow downloaded files to not be blocked by default...

Hi All,

So I checked the references articles that you provided. The unblock option, this looks like it would have to be run every time new files are downloaded from the internet? The GPO and registry option about zone information. Would this be effectively overriding the block to allow anything to be downloaded from the internet regardless of source? The client I'm working with, mainly downloads files from the company site on their Google drive. I tried adding their site to "Trusted Sites" and that didn't change anything. Unless I did it wrong.

Ok then, I wonder if Trusted Sites should work. I added drive.google.com as that is the source of their downloads in the case. I'm not trying to trust all internet downloads just from their company site.

Yeah, thanks, I'm referring to that command. So hopefully if I run it against the folder they download their files too, it should automatically unblock present and future downloads. Unless I read it wrong. They are all going to be upgrading or deploying to Windows 11 and I found this to be an issue after going to 11.

Hi guys,

So I tired first off with just doing the manual unblock method on the files. It turns out, if I checked unblock alone and hit apply and ok, it didn't resolve the issue with every file. I tired that method on three files and one of them it didn't work on. So I didn't even go to the PowerShell command. Some of the files are download from emails and some are from the shared Google drive for the company.
I'm wondering if there is something else I can check to see if I'm missing something?
Thanks,

I looked at them. From what I have been told and read, the disable blocked files allows anything to come through. I have tried to manually unblock files individually, and the preview feature still didn't work on all of them. I also tried adding the site to trusted sites which didn't work. The registry key method mentioned in the disable blocks files, is that to allow the files to be viewed in the preview? Thanks.

Hi All,

So after reading more, I tried the unblock command that I referenced to dacrone, and it works on the files in the folder. Now I will need to test it against new files. So now if I want to set it back to being blocked, just to see it go back to how it was. I'll have to find out how to do that. Good learning here.

Hi All,

After looking at multiple articles on this. I guess the better question. If I update the registry key to disable blocking downloads, is this just overriding the block on the preview feature in file explorer, or will this override the overall security warning for any files downloaded from the internet? Not sure if anyone knows, I can always test. Just was curious.

Thanks,

If you make that change, no downloaded files will get the MOTW (Mark of the Web). It's not related to how they're viewed. Another way to get the same result is to move your Downloads folder to a non-NTFS volume, since NTFS is required for the ADS (Additional Data Stream) where the MOTW is written.

I saw your comment. Understood. I decided to uninstall the update. The first time I ever did this. Now the previews work fine. In the end of all this I learned a lot about Windows and the MOTW etc. Good knowledge and research, even how to verify it in PowerShell.
