This tutorial will help show you how to find the wake source for what woke up your Windows 11 computer from a sleep or hibernate state.

When you put your computer to sleep or hibernate, many sources (ex: network, device or wake timers) can wake the computer.

References:

Contents

Option One

Find Last Wake Source using Command

1 Open Windows Terminal, and select either Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste the command below into Windows Terminal, and press Enter. (see screenshots below)

powercfg /lastwake

3 The output will now report information about what woke the system from the last sleep transition.

A "USB Controller" can be for a device (ex: wireless mouse) connected to the USB port.

Option Two

Find Wake Sources in Event Viewer

1 Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc).

2 Perform the following steps in the left pane of Event Viewer: (see screenshot below)
  1. Expand open Windows Logs.
  2. Click on System to open it in the middle pane.
  3. Right click on System, and click/tap on Filter Current Log.

3 Check Kernel-Power and Power-Troubleshooter in the Event sources drop menu. (see screenshots below)

Event_Viewer_wake_source-2.png
Event_Viewer_wake_source-3.png

4 Click/tap on an empty area in the "Filter Current Log" dialog to close the drop menu, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Event_Viewer_wake_source-4.png

5 You can now click/tap on an event log in the middle pane of Event Viewer to see its wake source. (see screenshots below)

Kernel-Power logs with Event ID 507 can help reveal if a Modern Standby device may have woken from Connected Standby.

Power-Troubleshooter logs can help ID wake sources like devices or timers.

That's it,

@Brink, Thanks for the reply. The fact that sleep works when selected via touch pad, even with a mouse connected (but not used at that moment) makes it very confusing. Any suggestions on how I would check the various Host Controllers and USB Root Hubs would be appreciated. I am thinking that I might be able to reduce any mouse sensitivity and/or speed settings, but not too hopeful, but will try anyway.

You can get a list of devices below that support waking the computer.

Afterwards, it's a bit of trial and error of disabling the ability to wake the computer for them until you find the culprit.

@Brink Thanks again for advice. After testing various mouse adjustments, including what they call sensitivity, but I would call Cursor Speed, down to the point where speed was almost unusable, I still had the problem of waking. It is definitely the mouse, wired or wireless the same.
On suspicion, I tried holding the mouse very firmly in place, not allowing even a tiny twitch when clicking sleep, releasing the button and moving my hand off the mouse and that way it will remain asleep properly. I assume that this laptop is hyper sensitive to mouse movement and find no way to reduce that. I bought my first computer for $4000 in 1992 and since I have been building my own periodically and have done repairs, new installs, etc. all these years and have never seen this before.
At this point I am going to give the laptop to the owner, who says she normally just closes the lid to sleep her old laptop and which works perfectly on the new laptop. I will also caution her to hold the mouse extremely still if using it to put the laptop to sleep instead of the lid.

Some time ago I wrote a simple batch script that uses the C# 5 compiler of .NET Framework 4.8.1 (that is available on Windows 11 by default) to compile a small .exe tool. Then when you run this tool, it waits for 2 seconds before it puts the computer in a Modern Standby sleep session. So, this will give you 2 seconds to let go of the mouse after you use the mouse to run the tool. Add "Turn off display" Context Menu in Windows 11

Sounds interesting, but I think that might be confusing for the woman I set the computer up for. She picked it up this afternoon and will normally just close the lid to put to sleep. I showed how to use the mouse so that it will shut it down by being careful not to let it move when letting go of mouse. I will keep a link to that information in case I need it in the future

I had this happen to me with my desktop PC about a year ago. It turned out to be one of the network cards built into the motherboard. As soon as anything pinged it, it would fire up the PC.

As an alternative, you could also decide to:
  1. Move the mouse arrow onto the Sleep menu option.
  2. Lift the mouse up from the desk's surface while ensuring not to move the mouse arrow off of the Sleep menu option.
  3. While still holding the mouse up, click on the Sleep menu option.
  4. Wait until the computer has entered the Modern Standby sleep session—the computer's power indicator LED slowly blinking.
  5. Put down the mouse while ensuring not to click with any of its buttons.
Doing this should help if you are having a hard time trying not to let it move when letting go of the mouse. IMO it still takes more effort than using the small tool I wrote for this exact purpose, though, and it doesn't require any third-party stuff nor requires to be installed or anything like that; it only needs to be compiled one time—i.e. by running the batch script.

I found that my mouse was waking the system, even after disabling all the stuff related to the mouse. Turns out that smart mice with macro commands can also look and be configured as a keyboard, when I tracked that down and disabled it, problem solved. I left the actual keyboard permission to wake the computer, I just didn't want moving the mouse to do it.

Hey mate, :alien:

Usually, it means there wasn't a device detected that last woke the system.

Does anything show in the event logs in option two?

Yes, there are entries in Event Viewer.
None really explain the reason for it waking from sleep.
It only started happening recently.

It only started happening recently.

It would be nice if it said why.

If you know which device is responsible, you should be able to disable allowing it to wake the computer.
