Solved Fingerprint recognition misbehaving

I'm gradually setting up and customizing my new laptop but I've hit a weird snag today. Initially, I set up just one local account using my nickname. I set up fingerprint recognition and set a pin and both worked fine. Today, I decided to rename the local account to use my first name. I found a video describing the technique and executed it. I decided to reboot to verify that all was well and the account name is now my first name instead of my nickname, just like I wanted. However, when I tried to sign in, it resolutely ignored my fingerprint: it didn't say it was wrong but it didn't sign me in either. It did, however, remember my PIN so I was able to get in. I assumed that it had somehow "forgotten" the fingerprint and attempted to register it again but it told me I'd already saved that fingerprint.

Have I just found a bug in the process for changing an account name? And more to the point, how do I get it to recognize my fingerprint again?

Fingerprint recognition can be fussy about the precise angle at which your finger is oriented. Try a couple of different positions - maybe one will work. It also doesn't like dirty fingers, or even sometimes smooth fingers. It is possible to set up two different fingers for detection. You may find that if the first finger doesn't work, the second might.

in settings, accounts, sign -in options set up another finger or you could remove the sign in option and set up again from new.

Finger print recognition doesn't work well if your finger is dry (very clean). I always run my finger across my forehead so it gets oiled.

I erased the old fingerprints (right forefinger, right middle finger) and re-registered them again. I did a Windows-L and it worked first time. Then I rebooted just to make sure it worked and it absolutely rejects both of those fingers after multiple tries.

Now what?

Please disregard my remarks at 5:53. Both fingers now seem to work. I've done a Windows-L a couple of times and each finger worked once without having to retry a bunch of times. I don't know why it was failing so stubbornly a couple of hours ago but I'm calling the problem solved, at least for now. I'll do a new post if the trouble starts again.

It has happened to me a lot. I have had to change my fingerprint (thumb) once every few months.

Another cause could be of Windows Update replacing your fingerprint sensor drivers and then it doesn't work properly. Apparently, this wasn't your case, but I just mention it if anyone else has the same issue.
