Fingerprint scanner on Dell G5 5500 sometimes doesn't work?

Hi, occasionally my laptop will start up and i will place my finger on the fingerprint reader (power button) and nothing happens, it doesn't even incorrect finger etc.

It's definitely clean though.
If I then restart the laptop again, it's always then fine and works that time.
Does this just sometimes happen?

The reader is made by goodix.

The driver for this seems very old, but there doesn't seem to be any newer ones. Dated 2019.

Believe it or not, I have this issue with my iDevices, often. It’s generally when my finger-tips are either cold or possibly damp (or maybe the print button is very cold).
Bizarre I know, but warming my finger-trips actually works, at least on my Apples.
