Solved Fix/Hide Bad Sectors

Now that the drive's internal controller has had a chance to test the whole drive it appears that it has given it a completely clean bill of health. Keep an eye on the SMART date from now on, but it appears you have nothing to worry about for now.

Yeah it all changed. . It was at "Caution", then after the full format was done, it's now "Good". . I'm still going to upgrade to the 8TB WD Black as soon as I can though. I need more space anyway.

That was just a provisional 'caution' based solely on the pending sector count. Pending sectors are like Schrödinger's Cat - they are both dead and alive until you look at them to determine their state. All yours turned out to be alive, so there should be nothing to worry about.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Can't help with the OP's problem but my experience with HDD's is the more space you have the more you need !!!! probably a bit like Russian Oligarchs and money --you can never have too much.

What you might consider though is moving some data you don't want to lose over to the cloud -- you can get a reasonable amount of storage on Ms's one drive at around 1.50 USD a month which should be affordable.

The other alternative depending on where you live is to visit your local "Tip" or re-cycling centre and see if there's any old computers being chucked out that still have HDD's in them. Pretty well any computer manufactured in the last 10 years will probably have a decent-ish HDD in it (or maybe 2 or even 3). Remove them, clean them up and replace into your current system. As an "Old School" Engineer I'm quite used to canabalizing old gear for spare parts to service newer stuff to keep it running.

I've "rescued" quite a bit of hardware that way over the years.
