Solved Fixing Frozen Windows 11 Screen Saver Settings Issue

If I set a screen saver to run using Windows 11 Screen Saver Settings, after 10 minutes, the screen saver starts to splutter and eventually it freezes my PC needing a hard reset. It doesn't matter what screen saver I pick, they all do the same.

However, if I manually run any screen savers by clicking on their .scr or shortcut, they all run perfectly for hours. So this issue must be related to the built in Windows 11 Screen Saver Settings.

I've got a Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X motherboard with the latest bios.
13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900F
64.0 GB DDR5 RAM
Gigabyte RTX 3060 Graphics card with the latest Nvidia drivers.

I don't see anything show up in event viewer when it freezes.

I'm guessing that the way screen savers work in Windows 11 hasn't changed much since early builds of Windows. Could it be that Screen Saver Settings in Windows 11 isn't compatible with latest hybrid processors.

Has anybody else had this issue and found a fix?

But that wouldn't run my favourite screen saver would it?

As a work around, I have created a desktop shortcut and used a keyboard shortcut to run my favourite screensaver (JPEGSavr) when I want it, but if somebody knocks my mouse or keyboard it stops running. The advantage of screen saver settings it would automatically start again after 1 minute.

OK, I have solved the problem by doing an over the top install of Windows 11 from a USB stick. I chose not to check for updates and tested out the screen savers. They worked perfectly. I then made a backup with Macrium Reflect and installed the first set of Windows Updates. Backup up again and tested the screen savers. All OK. Installed the next found Windows Updates and tested again. Screen savers still working. Windows Update says I am now up to date (same version and build as before) so backed up again.

Happy days!! I can't believe I've spent so much time trying to fix this issue and then have to install Windows 11 to fix it. Think I'll go and have a lie down now (leaving the screen saver running) :giggle:
