Folders not automatically refreshing after KB5032190 update

I work with hundreds of images weekly and have folders open in medium & large thumbnail view. All folders are sorted by name as a default. Before installing KB5032190 update, all folders would refresh automatically without having to constantly hit F5 everytime I edit or duplicate. If I hold CTRL and drag (before KB5032190) to duplicate, the dupes use to automatically be placed in front/before the original. After installing KB5032190, the dupes are now placed at the end of the images in the folder and I have to constantly hit F5 to refresh and place them in the desired order. This even happens when I edit an image and save. The edited image gets placed at the end of the folder until I again hit the F5 key. I have been searching the internet for many days. I have tried all of the various fixes, rebuild thumbnail cache, system repairs, etc. The only thing I was left with was uninstalling KB5032190. I do not wish to disable Windows update and block this patch from ever returning but looking for a solution or suggestion to this issue. :(

Here are some suggestions from Bard. The first one worked for me, although I had to create \Background\Refresh before creating the DWORD AlwayRefresh:

There are a few things you can try to restore automatic refresh functionality in File Explorer on Windows 11:
1. Enable Background Refresh:
  • Open Registry Editor by pressing Win + R and typing regedit.
  • Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Background\Refresh.
  • Look for a DWORD value named AlwaysRefresh. If it exists and is set to 0, double-click it and change the value to 1. If it doesn't exist, right-click in the empty space on the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it AlwaysRefresh, and set the value to 1.
  • Close Registry Editor and restart File Explorer (right-click Taskbar, select Task Manager, find File Explorer, right-click and choose Restart).
2. Clear File Explorer History and Cache:
  • Open File Explorer.
  • Click the three dots in the top right corner and select Options.
  • Go to the Privacy tab.
  • Click the button Clear File Explorer history.
  • Check the boxes for Clear history and Clear recently used folders in Quick access and click Clear.
  • Restart File Explorer.
3. Check Group Policy (if applicable):
  • Press Win + R and type gpedit.msc.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer.
  • Look for the setting Disable background refresh of recently changed items and make sure it's set to Disabled.
  • Restart File Explorer.
4. Run System File Checker:
  • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  • Wait for the scan to complete and restart your computer.
5. Update Windows:
  • Make sure you have the latest Windows updates installed. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
If none of these suggestions work, you can try creating a new user profile on your computer and see if the issue persists. This will help rule out any corrupted settings in your current profile.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

This problem has existed for over two decades.
I have never seen a permanent solution.
The problem just comes & goes of its own accord.
I wasted a month of my life searching for a permanent solution without success.
I reboot my computers every day because, it seems to me, that the problem occurs less frequently that way. But I could be fooling myself. Perhaps hanging a sprig of holly over my desk has the same effect.

All the best,
Denis

@Try3 It would take more than holly. Nothing short of surrounding yourself with every method man has ever used since the beginning of time to ward off evil spirits could be of benefit. Refresh issues haves come and gone for as long as I've used Windows. I agree one is spinning his wheels trying to solve it.

What stinks is that Microsoft is completely aware of the problem and they refuse to address it even though they are releasing AI updates and other services which are less impactful as this issue which were are discussing. I'm a photographer who depends on the auto refresh when dealing with hundreds of images on a daily basis. I even load stacked focus images into individual folders to batch process with Helicon Focus and need the folders to auto show the thumbnail on the outside of folder preview so that I can see which folders already have images to be processed. Manually refreshing after every copy to hundreds of folders is extreme torture and frustrating. Before "(KB5034123)" everything worked perfectly. I did restore my computer from an Acronis image backup from the day before the update but I can no longer receive Windows 11 updates since I also had to disable the service to prevent (KB5034123) from attempting to download and install again. The other down side is that if I leave my computer functioning correctly for my photography, I may be depriving it from up to date fixes from Microsoft. Truly frustrating. Microsoft may soon surpass Apple as the most valuable company in the world according to experts, so you would think they would fix the software which built their wealth decades before.

Marley,

This problem is so haphazard that you might well find that repeating the same update does not mess up your Refresh.

You don't have to disable the updates. All you have to do is hide this update
using wushowhide and windows will not install it but, you will receive other updates.
Also, before you hide the update, go off line and exit AVG. Do your thing with the
photos and see if this will continue. Just a thought.

Thanks. I tried disabling AVG. That did not work. The error only exists with the installation of (KB5034123). For some reason "wushowhide" could not detect (KB5034123) to stop it so I had to stop the update service under services. I even disabled it under group policy. Strangely all of that will not stop updates from restarting again. They seem to come back after 5 weeks as if I "paused updates" under windows updates. Microsoft seems to have some sort of override to bypass any manual settings when it comes to updates. At least this seems to happen on my PC.
Thanks for your help and responses. I'm throwing in the towel with this one. lol

That's a shame, I was hoping you'd find a solution that I could use. I am on your same boat and having to hit F5 all the time while editing books is a real PITA.
You are confirming that we are not crazy. There's definitely a bug with refreshing thumbnails and sorting them automatically. Everything was perfect until KB5034123 for me. I tried every fix I could find but the only proof I have KB5034123 caused the issue is when I restored the HD from an image backup, everything was back to normal. It may seem like a small issue to a lot of folks, especially those at Microsoft, but since I work constantly with hundreds of folders and images, it is critical. (At least for me)

Thanks, this problem started suddenly for me in the last few days. I had already found 2, 3 & 4 and tried and my Windows 11 is up to date.

I then looked at 1, and found I had no Background key. I made that and added DWORD as instructed and the problem was instantly solved after I did a File Explorer restart again (I had already restarted File Explorer numerous times prior to this with no effect).

Thanks for this fix!

It won't last. Do let us know, though.

We've all tried that. No luck with that.

Just reporting that it did fix it for me on Windows 11 and saying thanks to the poster of that into. I am sure it is not the fix for every situation.
