I got a new laptop yesterday. Actually, it is a new, old stock laptop, vintage 2023, but brand spanking new. Everything worked great but I could not get the fingerprint sensor to work. Spent all day yesterday and all night trying various things, even called Lenovo tech support and they could not solve the issue.
Today, I had an epiphany, and my idea ended up resolving the issue.
I realized that the fingerprint sensor is a USB device, and USB ports on this laptop are still powered even with the laptop shutdown. That made me wonder if possibly the fingerprint sensor was simply "hung up" and needed to be power cycled, but my theory was that turning off the laptop might not remove power from the sensor. Thankfully, Lenovo has a cool feature: Go into the BIOS setup and use the option to disconnect the battery. Yes, Lenovo has an option that electrically disconnects the battery and leaves it disconnected until the USB-C charger is plugged in. That resolved the problem!
Bottom line: If you have a problem fingerprint sensor, trying completely removing power. On some laptops, you do this by holding the power buttom for a period of time, say like 30 seconds. Check with the maker of your laptop.
