For many -- why not use VM's now - almost as good as Host performance

Hi folks
Current Virtualisation software - even with bog standard "Virtualisation BIOS" rather than pass thru you can get almost native performance on your Windows Guest as running as a real machine on any decent sensible hardware these days.

Here I'm running KVM/QUEMU on Fedora F45 (pre-release) as host but if you aren't too bothered about sound etc Windows 11 HYPER-V is also great as a HOST--

Here I've got a huge file being copied concurrently with SKY GO playing a recording from Talking Pictures TV with zero lag etc ON THE VM !!



Absolutely no jitter etc on the Video or sound lag from Talking pictures TV (FTA BTW).

I can't see myself using a physical W11 install any more. - If Video performs like this on a VM now - and I want to have a go with different W11 builds this seems the way to go !!!

CPU load on host is zilch too !! considering what I'm asking the VM to do -- espcially copying a HUGE file (18 seasons of old BBC series Heartbeat) from an external 2.5 inch SSD to an external NVME SSD type device while at the same time running the video !!!!.

For the most part, I agree, with the exception of 3D graphics-intensive applications. A VM is always going to be an emulation layer over software designed to run natively on the hardware. Otherwise gaming on a VM would be a viable alternative to running windows natively.

Why bother introduce a complicated layer to just run Windows when you can run it natively?

VMs have their place for domestic consumers e.g. testing Insider versions.

I challenge users to benchmark Windows running in a VM e.g. via a Linux or Windows vm versus native running.

Even my i9 laptop with nvme and 16GB Ram is significantly slower in a vm - at best it runs at 70% in Hyper-V.

I am sorry but vague "it is almost as good" phrases are meaningless and potentially misleading without context e.g. pc setup, vm setup, benchmark settings etc.

To me, telling people with powerful pcs that maybe a vm is a good way of running windows is kind of preaching to the converted.

Aside from that, why do a VM? I'm all for VMs. Beats the old multibooting I used to do years ago.

I guess I'm not smart enough to have multiple windows sessions each running daily driver applications. YMMV.

I don't need to skate on the bleeding edge on one window and on a different edge in another window. There's nothing wrong with using a VM for the right task.

We are in violent agreement, @gunrunnerjohn

All that nice experience will degrade to salt once you try to work with hardware. A USB device, a GPU, your bluetooth or wifi stick etc.
VMs are not that easy and carefree

IMO dealing with VMs is not as straightforard for a newbie as it is for someone who if familiar with all the ins and outs of dealing with them. I may be an oldtimer with Windows but consider myself a newbie with VMs. I've played with them for years in VMWare Workstation but have not USED them day to day.

I have 3 - Win10, Mint, and Windows 7. Each one has a specific purpose and is rarely used. With Windows 7 I build themes. I use Windows 10 specifically for mounting Macrium images. Mint VM was created for use as file recovery on old Windows drives which I rarely do anymore now that I stopped working.
Since I don't use them often, I'm like a little baby newb every time I boot one up. I find myself spending a lot of time fumbling around trying to learn the little I knew (and forgot) all over again and I get frustrated.
