Forced update during OOBE

Why am I forced to download updates during OOBE before signing in after a clean install from the MCT created USB which is based on build 26100.2033? I also noticed that I’m no longer asked to name the device during OOBE before it asks to sign in. Why?

Hi Keith.

It’s the new install process. Microsoft has decided to update the ISO with the latest Cumulative Updates/Windows Build during the install process.
I could only wonder if turning the router off during install would help. Apparenty it may nag a few times but eventually continue. I am not really sure. I am also not sure if ipconfig /release works anymore during OOBE.

It has changed a lot. I only clean installed once, I didn’t even like the partition selection process. Where once it used to know the obvious drive/partition, now it seems not to.

Renaming the PC after load should still be easy?

I read that thread, I concluded that turning off the router would achieve the same thing, would this be incorrect?

I haven't tried it, but I would think so. It seems like if you break the connection to that Microsoft domain I mentioned, the update process doesn't work. I've done it by adding a hosts file to my installation media, but other methods should work.

During the clean install, on the 3rd screen there is a link to use the previous installation method.

This avoids this ridiculous change which slows down oobe be up to an hour depending on internet speed and drive speeds.

Feedback to MS about this ridiculous change.

Yep, but with setup being an updatable thing, I like having a way to skip the updates, for when Microsoft may decide to remove the old setup routine.
