That had already been done in the screenshot though, evidenced by the second 'More options' tab.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup assistant for Microsoft Windows clients and servers.

On start up, it reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views:

  • The directory list, which resembles the tree view of the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
  • The treemap, which shows the whole contents of the directory tree straight away,
  • The extension list, which serves as a legend and shows statistics about the file types.
The treemap represents each file as a colored rectangle, the area of which is proportional to the file's size. The rectangles are arranged in such a way, that directories again make up rectangles, which contain all their files and subdirectories. So their area is proportional to the size of the subtrees. The color of a rectangle indicates the type of the file, as shown in the extension list. The cushion shading additionally brings out the directory structure.

Yes it is safe to download. @antspants would not have suggested it otherwise. We are more than happy to answer your questions but we can not lead you by the hand every step of the way.

You need to consider you have a very small system drive. You can only do so much in reducing the amount of data on it so IMO you are spinning your wheels. Common sense says either buy a larger drive to accomodate all your stuff, uninstall some programs, or move your personal files off the system drive onto another drive, either fixed or usb.

Always make your own choices. I can’t speak for everyone, but I take no responsibilities for what you do.

NOTE: I have never used the clean up function in that app. I use the app to identify files/file sizes and where they are.
For all I know the clean up actually works. I don’t recall it being there. It’s been at least 6 years since I have used the app.

Also, if you don’t create a system image before screwing around with anyones suggestions in this thread, I’d say that would be foolish.
After seeing many of your threads in this forum, if anyone should backup their system before making changes to their PC, you should.

Hmmm. I thought WinDirStat was frozen in time but it looks like it's been resuscitated and was last updated in January 2025. Good to know! I'll throw in a possible alternate -- namely WizTree, which catalogs a disk more quickly than WinDirStat and is likewise freeware. The home page says "46X faster than WinDirStat" FWIW. Check it out.

Way back when, about 45 years ago, we never thought we would ever need all of the 10 Megs that came on the original PC-XT. Now my home computer has a 1T C: DRIVE, a 4T internal D: drive, and an external 4T drive (used primarily as backup). In the long run, get an additional drive and move the bulk of your data files to the new drive.
