Windows 11 Requirements​

Checking The Hardware & Software Requirements​

Well, it is official. Window 10 is being retired after October 14th, 2025 and will no longer be supported. What does this mean? Your computer will still work. However, with security threats on the rise, it is imperative you upgrade, immediately. The great news is that you still have time to make the jump. First, let’s tackle the elephant in the room: you’ll need to confirm that your PC meets the minimum system requirements for the update. You can check the Windows 11 system specifications and requirements here: Microsoft Windows 11 System Requirements. If you are using S Mode in Windows 10, please switch out of S Mode before upgrading to 11. Lastly, Windows will be upgraded to the equivalent versions. For example, Windows Home> edition will upgrade to Windows 11 Home, while Windows 10 Pro will upgrade to Windows 11 Pro accordingly.

Extended Security Updates Program​

Can't Upgrade Yet, Try Extending Your Security Updates​

If you still want to hold on to Windows 10 you will have to enroll to the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) Program which is a paid program. You can learn more about the program by following the link: Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 | Microsoft Learn. Lastly, Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer be supported after October 14, 2025, on Windows 10 devices. To use Microsoft 365 Applications on your device, you will need to upgrade to Windows 11. Listed below are the following steps to upgrade your device.

Program Limitations​

  • New features
  • Customer-requested non-security updates
  • Design change requests
  • General support won't be provided for Windows versions past the end of support date. Support will be available only to those organizations that purchase ESU for specific situations concerning the security updates. To get technical support, organizations must have an active support plan in place.

Upgrading Utilizing Microsoft Update​

Upgrade Your Windows 10 Device Via Windows Update​

  • First check to see if you device meets the minimum criteria for upgrading your device by navigating to the following website: Windows 11 Specs and System Requirements | Microsoft
  • After ensuring your device meets the minimum requirements, navigate to your Desktop taskbar. In the search bar, type and select “Settings.”
  • From the menu, click “Privacy and Security,” then select "Windows Update."
  • click download and install the windows update.
  • You will need to reboot your computer. The update can take a while to prepare your device. Do not turn off your computer during the update. Doing so can cause harm to your computer.
Congratulations! You now have windows 11. Windows 11 has new features in store to enhance productivity, security, and accessibility. You will be able to rest assured that your device will now receive updates. If you would like to learn more, please see the links below for a deeper dive.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
My guess is that post by MS as per the screenshot from @Bree was aimed at Non-Profits who get MS operating systems and software under a different pricing/licensing regime than the average joe/jane public. Note it says NONPROFIT TECHIES. It is a blog of Non-profit techies. Also if you read carefully some of the other details in the post and follow the hyperlinks it seems to be aimed at non-profit enterprises only.

agreed. This is just microsoft trying to get more people to move over to 11 without cost for security sake in orgs that cannot afford it.

There's specific MS programs to allow accredited non-profits to get deeply discounted MS software, and MS employees can even sponsor local organizations to get benefits. One of my friends does that with his local school's volunteers.

I can certainly imagine that. I wish big companies like the one I worked for would donate their older (lol 4 year) stuff to them. Instead of sending them to recycle centers which I guarantee are not actually being recycled.

MS have already said that for consumers it will be just one year of ESU at $30. It's the enrolment that won't be open until nearer October.

...for the first time, an ESU option for consumers, available for a one-year option for $30. Program enrollment will be available closer to the end of support in 2025.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Yeah - to me this is really marketing reputation deflection.
Inevitably there will be an outcry when W10 becomes EOL for unsupported PCs.

The derisory ESU "olive branch" will deflect MS getting high levels of public flak.
After 1 year, W10 will fade into the past to a degree i.e. MS "ride the storm".

In the end ESU is really aimed at companies to give them time to replace their pc stock.

In the end, MS are following Apple philosophy - make old pcs obsolete and do not give a rats posterior!

I have an unsupported HP laptop and a supported Dell laptop running Win 11, but my ASUS desktop from 2012 will remain on Win 10 as I don't fear a lack of security updates and the machine is working fine, meaning I don't want the hassle of fixing things when they don't work under Win 11 (like the File Explorer issue dealing with my MYBOOK NAS, and printer connection issues.. I'll take windows 10 to the grave with my - and at 73 this year, that may not be too terribly long :unsure:

Microsoft is making Windows 10 users an offer they (probably) can't refuse
