Freezes then restarts nvlddmkm.sys

@jds63 - Sorry to hear your problems are back. Maybe its not the same problem. For me I think I've had three different issues. I'm hoping I have a fix, however, history tells me not to declare victory on this one.

The latest is perhaps the most telling first GPU install, then power and now oddly network driver. My symptoms and potential fix may not apply to others, but may be indicative of a common problem.

Like you nvlddmkm.sys black screen only at idle

Now had two periods of 3 days each, when the PC has been 100% stable. I've not had this since I built the PC in December.
For me the big change turned out to be installing the the intel recommended "Intel Ethernet Controller I226-V driver 2.1.1.14". I'm gradually removing other "fixes" I've made to see if anything else impacted.

Symptoms
  1. PC black screen at low load. Some restarts. Some power off. Normally no dump. TDR/0 error in event log. Gaming at load OK. Never crashes.
  2. iGPU works fine w/o RTX4080 add RTX4080 and a now see mix of hardware error and TDR/0
  3. After latest BIOS / fixes, problem appears to be restricted to start-up
  4. Black screen GPU timeout ("nvlddmkm/0") always preceded by network timeout ("e2fnexpress/27").
These events appear to correlate. Perhaps nvlddmkm is the victim and the cause is signalled by the e2fnexpress network drop. Both are dependant on the z790 chipset.

    1680544964855.png

    1680545001510.png
Potentially significant changes

The first two lessened the pain. The last two appear to have cured it.
  1. Reinstalled GPU using brace supplied with GPU
  2. Power to PC from wall socket not extension
  3. Installed latest (but since withdrawn MSI BIOS ( 7D91vH3 )
  4. Installed Intel recommended Intel Ethernet Controller I226-V driver 2.1.1.14 instead of the MSI recommended 2.1.3.3
Impact of n/w driver
  1. Installed 2.1.1.14 - 3 days no problem - no TDR / no hardware errors - still e2fnexpress/27 and occasional loss of network at boot
  2. Reinstalled 2.1.3.3 - 3 days of problems - TDR / hardware issues - but network more reliable.
  3. Reinstalled 2.1.1.14 - 3 days no problem
Hypothesis and current settings

Issues with z790 chipset and intel drivers. Perhaps bus conflicts. Why when the TDR timeout defaults to 0, is there ALWAYS a network drop warning 4-5 seconds earlier. While the timeout occurs on the GPU, perhaps the network loss is more significant. The things that tie all these together are the z790 chipset in my case. So, what can I do to remove / lessen conflicts? Stop unnecessary intel services.
  1. Current settings - ( in the process of rolling back changes slowly to see if any impact):
  2. Windows Startup - Disable Intel Graphics Center Startup service
  3. Windows Services - Disable / uninstall Intel driver support service
  4. Windows Graphics - HAGS disabled
  5. Windows Devices - Disable iGPU in devices
  6. BIOS - XMP enabled (change from disabled)
  7. BIOS - Boot to GPU (PEG) - do not use iGPU
  8. BIOS - Latest BIOS ( 7D91vH3 - now withdrawn )
  9. NVidia Control center - Power Management Mode - Prefer Max Performance
  10. NVidia Latest drivers
  11. Power options - Wireless adapter - max performance
  12. Power options - intel graphics power plan - max performance
  13. Power options - PCIe Link State Power Management - Off
  14. Power options - Processor power management 10/100
  15. Daily Tests - multiple reboots (10+), periods of idleness, gaming at 4K
Other actions during process:
  1. O/S installs - many
  2. DDU clean install - one - important as I switched GPU's during analysis
  3. DISM/SFC - many
  4. Multiple disk checks - ScanDisk and Samsung Magician
  5. Memory checks - Windows and memcheck
  6. CPU test - CineBench (not tried Prime95)
  7. GPU test - 3DMark

Not tried
  1. Underclocking GPU - RTX 4080 has a small pre-applied overclock, but I refuse to underclock given that it has NEVER once crashed under load.

I got the same error, nvlddmkm.sys black screen
\Device\Video3
Error occurred on GPUID: 100.

I am using RTX 3070Ti, but this happened when I started Aid64 while I was playing.
But I disabled HAGS and I'll test again for a few days.
HAGS disabled and happened again.

Last time i had a freeze up from nvlddmkm.sys was back from my last post on February 25 2023. Been using my PC same way with the same settings. Only changes was updating system drivers, NVIDIA driver to latest each time came out and recently had a BIOS update for my motherboard couple weeks ago.

Because we all here show this nvlddmkm.sys in our event manager when we have issues doesn't necessarily mean our issues are caused by the same thing, know i have said this before. nvlddmkm.sys is a common thrown error associated with NVIDIA GPU and it's drivers sure we all know this. Appreciate the input here and will keep updating my status or finds in this matter.

If been googling this matter which am sure you all have done with nvlddmkm.sys you'll find lot's of differences and even older dates going back 3 years or more.

I completely agree with post above from jds63!

Still did not find a fix for mine cause of the error but did found out something strange. Since installing older GPU driver my crashes happen every 20-40 min instead of just few mins before. And I can kind of reset the time of the crash by unplugging laptop from charger for few secs and bring it back on. (So I can play without crashes like that, but not sure how bad this is for the laptop). Just to be clear I have no crashes normally but only while playing demanding games. Since I have no knowledge in computers, my best guess is that in my case it has to do something with voltages.

If anyone has any suggestions, pleas share them.

Good morning community. I'm using google translator. I'm going to tell them that I solved that problem for me so they can try it. I used pretty much everything found on Google and many forums and nothing worked for me. Then I realized that this "nvlddmkm.sys" error only appeared when the gpu was at rest, when it was not given a heavy or moderate load.

So what I did was go to the nvidia control panel> Global configuration and in the part that says "Power control mode" I left it in Maximum preferred Performance. What I don't like about this solution is that it keeps your graphics card with high consumption at all times but it worked.

I hope it helps you in some way.

Actualización.
El error lo provocaba un ssd M. 2 qué adquirí. Al parecer algunas board como la mía, una gigabyte. El puerto M2 compartía memoria con el puerto de la gráfica.

Now that Nivida has officially acknowledged the issue as one of the known issues for the latest drivers 531.41 and 531.61, I hope they release a fix for it soon.

- Increase in DPC latency observed in Latencymon [3952556]
- Event Viewer logs nvlddmkm error at the end of the OCCT video ram test when memory is full [4049182]
- After updating to R530 drivers, certain GeForce RTX 40 series notebook models may randomly experience a TDR/black screen [4024853]

Also getting nvlddmkm in the event viewer. For me it occurs when I am streaming and have too many things running (2 games, 4 monitors) and then try to open a video in Microsoft Edge.

Black screens (but music still runs) > after about 30 secs sometimes the gpu driver restarts, sometimes it freezes (sound as well).
Done several DDU installs.

Have you tried the TdrDelay registery update? I put this in place a week ago and haven't had a crash since with my 4090:

1. Goto registry editor (start -> run -> regedit)
2. Navigate yourself to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/GraphicsDrivers (make sure GraphicsDrivers is highlighted).
3. Right click -> New -> DWORD (32-bit) value -> Name it: TdrDelay -> double click it -> Set it to A (hexadecimal) or 10 (decimal).
4. Reboot your PC
Thank you for this information. After setting this up and then also changing my power management from Balanced to High Performance Things have been "Knock on wood" running fine in games.

So after over a week of no crashing, I stupidly let windows update, now I get crashes almost immediately in games, sometimes TPM crashes sometimes the usual nvlddmkm crashes, DDUing old driver didnt fix it, Im now rolling back the windows update to see if that helps. This is such a ridiculous problem.
Hi, Windows update probably reset the TDR registry values?

Hi, I was also suffering from nvlddmkm.sys error.
こんにちは。私もまたnvlddmkm.sysのエラーに悩まされていました。

However, I have noticed that when I put Windows to sleep and then return to it, this error almost disappears.
しかし、Windowsをスリープさせて、その後復帰すると、このエラーがほとんど出なくなることに気付きました。

Previously, the number of errors had been more than 10 per day, but now it has decreased to about one or two per month.
それまで、1日に10回以上のエラーが発生していましたが、現在は1ヶ月に1~2回程度まで減少しました。

Note that if you shut down or restart Windows, the problem will recur. At that time, the problem will be resolved by putting the system to sleep again.
なお、Windowsをシャットダウンしたり、再起動したりすると、問題は再発します。その時はまたスリープさせると解決します。

I have tried most of what has been written here, including updating and reinstalling video drivers, power supply settings, changing GPU clocks, TDR values, etc., but all have been ineffective and the only thing that has solved this problem is sleep.
ビデオドライバの更新や再インストール、電源の設定、GPUクロックの変更、TDRの値など、ここに書き込まれたことはだいたい試しましたが、全て効果がなく、この問題を解決できたのはスリープだけでした。

This method may not work in all cases, but it is easy to implement and we encourage you to try it.
全てのケースにおいてこの方法が有効だとは限りませんが、簡単に実行できるため、ぜひ試してみてください。

I hope this information is useful to you all.
この情報が皆さんの役に立つことを祈っています。

Hello, I'm glad I found this thread. First of all, I'm from Germany and my English isn't the best.
Yes, I also have the problem that my system freezes, but only when it is idle or with browser applications.
Connect your computer directly to the wall and make sure you're using the GPU that card. This happened to me with a new build. I troubleshot for a month and tried everything you did and more. It ended up being a power issue. I had my computer connected to surge protector which was connected to another power extender which was connected to the wall. Connecting directly to the wall resolved the issue immediately.

PLUG YOUR COMPUTE DIRECTLY INTO THE WALL.....

I bought a new MSI 4080 Suprim X and after sleep the cards power was heavily reduced to essentially 0%. nvlddmkm ERROR was seen in event viewer after this and in the rare occasion it would hard crash I would see the dxgmms2.sys that others saw in their BSODs. After doing everything including re-installing windows and eventually setting up an RMA yesterday it finally hit me to plug the computer directly into an outlet as it was plugged into a surge protector that was plugged into another power adapter that was plugged into the wall. Plugging it directly into the wall immediately fixed ALL my issues and I was finally able to use the "Gaming" BIOS on the card which only showed a black screen before.
