I am not an insider and have always had “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” disabled. Today I noticed I no longer had that option and I had received KB5095093. So I asked dear old co-pilot and found that in their ultimate wisdom this option is now deprecated and MS is pushing Preview updates whether we want them or not.. I'm sure that a lot of other users do not want to install preview updates either.

To go back the way I was, I asked co-pilot which me directed to group policy settings that do not exist in my PRO.. Co-pilot also gave me an optional regedit method (creating 2 new dword values) which I used, but I had much rather use group policy if I can find the correct ones to modify. I have requested Brink to write a new tutorial on this so if you are like me and do not want to install preview updates, be on the look out for a new tutorial.

When did you notice this? I'm on 26200.8737 and I still have the toggle for "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available". I can still toggle it on and off. I'll need to keep an eye out to see if and when that will disappear.

WuMgr, Powershell or WAUManager - you can hide preview updates. that what i do whenever they show up so during maintenance they won't accidentally get installed when you click "Check for Updates" (since good ol' Microffffffffffffffffffk likes to make CHECK for updates AUTO install after checking...)

(forgot, if you want to use Settings to install updates - pause and then resume updates. when resumed, the hidden wont show)

I got a notification this morning that I needed to restart. Wanting to know why, I found that KB5095093 had been installed and noticed the option was gone.

That's the deal, for those that are affected, you can't do that any more because if one checks for updates they are no longer optional. They automatically start downloading. Mine automatically downloaded & installed during sometime during maintenance hours last night

you're running pro... you can do it super fast with just gpedit:

Computer Config > Admin Templates > All Settings

mine has been set for 4 years now and i have never once had updates auto install... unless, as i stated... i go in and click the "Check for Updates". then it will check and install once its done checking. if i just let windows check on it's own, i simply get a toast notification stating that updates are available. that's when i see what they are and hide any if desired, then recheck and let it install them after that.

extra note:

if you configure this one and set it to 2, you wont even get the toast notifications letting you know updates are available. you will have to open windows updates to see if it has any ready.

There's Windows Updates Mini Tool, with that you can set updates to manual, the only catch is, you need Pro versions or upwards, Home edition is stuck with whatever they want to feed you.
There are other tools for Home editions tho...

Personally, I use WUMT, automatic updates are disabled, and I look for updates using the tool first to ensure there's stuff I need to hide before I let WU do it's thing as usual.

I just checked a dozen PCs running a blend of Windows 26200.8655 and 26200.8737, and ALL of them have that "Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available" toggle available. A Google search for this issue reveals it's happened before with previous versions, so between these things I suspect that something else has happened in your case as this does not appear to be part of a larger planned rollout. However, it does appear to be controlled by a feature flag (id:42921948), so I wonder if it somehow got flipped on your PC, causing the issue.

I'm on 26200.8737 and have KB5095093 installed. I still have the setting for 'get the latest updates as soon as they are available' and can turn it off.
I have done a resart and a cold boot and its still there.

Under 'pause updates' I see a new button for 'pick a date'.

I don't want to bore everyone with these long posts, but this has shown me just how under-handed MS can be so as users we need to be aware of how they do it.

Let me note that adding these 2 registry keys brought back the toggle just as co-pilot said adding them would do. Notice the 2nd one points to this Continuous Innovation, whatever the hell that is.
