Game won't start after disconnecting external display

Hi all,

I recently bought a new laptop: HP Victus Win 11 (22H2, 22621.1555) laptop, Nvidia Rtx 3060.
The laptop is connected to a Samsung TV (60hz refresh rate, 1920x1080) over Hdmi.

As a long-time PlayStation owner, I'm not very familiar with playing games on PC.
Recently I bought Cyberpunk 2077, which was on sale, from the Epic store and installed it while the external display was active.
The game works fine, except I couldn't get the desired FPS.

Today I wanted to check if I could get a higher FPS by using the laptop's own monitor (140+ Hz refresh rate).

Desktop right click > Display Settings > "Show only on 1": this disconnected from the external display (TV) and the laptop's own display got active.

But afterward, Cyberpunk 2077 wouldn't launch.

I was able to solve this issue by doing the following steps:
- chose "Extend these displays" from Display Settings
- launched the game, which started fine on the external display (Display #2)
- dragged the game's "Launcher" window to Display #1 (= the laptop's own monitor)
- chose "Show only on 1" so that Display #2 disconnected again.

After launching the game on the laptop's own monitor there was another problem: the mouse pointer was lagging a lot!
Also, I wasn't able to change the resolution, clicking on any setting didn't work at all.

How can I make Windows (and the game) automatically recognize which display is currently active and also fix the mouse lag issue?

Any help is appreciated.

Hello @Wolf359 ...and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

If you haven't already done so...

In Nvidia Control Panel... right click the laptop screen and set it as "Primary"
Then in Win 11 settings, choose " Extend these displays".

Other than that I don't know what to suggest.
It's how I have mine set up, and any window seems to work on either screen.
(Wherever I drag the window to).

Hi @Ghot,

thanks for the quick reply.

The Windows display settings screen is easier to understand, but the Nvidia screen does not show the primary display at all:

Screenshot 2023-04-15 023834.png

It only shows my Samsung TV.

I figured maybe it was because I changed from "Show only on 2" to "Extend these displays", maybe the Nvidia settings aren't up to date, so I restarted the laptop, but the Nvidia settings still don't show the primary (laptop) display.

Also, clicking "Identify" in Windows display settings shows the "1" and "2" correctly, but when I choose Display > "Identify displays" in Nvidia settings I only get a "1" on *both* displays (which are currently active / "extending").

@Wolf359

That may be a laptop only thing.
I'm on a desktop. Maybe on a laptop the laptop display is always Primary?

Maybe try "Duplicate these displays". It's the only one left. :-)

The good thing is that Nvidia sees my rather old (> 10 years) Samsung TV. I'd be more worried if it was the other way around.

I just tried the "Duplicate" setting but the result is the same.

I guess you're right about the laptop monitor not showing up in settings.

So I changed back to "Show only on 1" and unplugged the Hdmi cable from the laptop. The Nvidia settings changed to :

So far so good, but when trying to start the game I get these entries in the Epic games launcher log files:

[2023.04.15-00.17.32:766][788]LogRunningAppService: Display: New foreground app C:/Program Files/Epic Games/Cyberpunk2077/

Maybe an Epic games launcher bug (?).

I just don't know for sure. I've never used a laptop. I'm definitely a desktop person.
Just give it some time... there's plenty of folks on here that do use laptops.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. :(

I miss the easiness of PlayStation already :-)
Will try my luck on the Epic games forum as well.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time.
