Getting past "Select app" in generating a 16 digit app password.

currently says the following:

1. 1. Sign in to your Google Account.
   2. Click Security.
   3. Click Select app and choose the app.
   4. Click Select device and pick the device you're using.
   5. Click Generate.
   6. Follow the instructions to enter the app password. The app password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
   7. Tap Done.
2. Tip: Most of the time, you'll only have to enter an app password once per app or device, so don't worry about memorizing it.

What should I do?

If I search this forum for “Google app password” by user “Jro11” the results are quite numerous.

Is your email broken again? If not, there should be no need to generate another password. In the instructions I emailed you I said if that option was not available in your settings, sign in to your google account and go here to generate a 16 digit password for your mail app. HERE

- In fact, when I searched this forum for app password the first hit I got was a thread begun by me. (one which inadvertently pursued the subject of how great imap accounts were because I had mistakingly indicated I was pursuing a POP3 account)
- And in fact, yesterday I was able to surprise my partner with having succeeded in getting around all her Outlook (pop) email problems by addressing this very problem! However that required having to contact Google and spend an hour convincing their specialist that though this was a password I needed to solve a Microsoft account problem that it was they (google) from which I needed to get this number!!

- And, yes, glass, I did create an app password using Account settings: Your browser is not supported. but there was no place to insert it into (Steps 5,6,7) so I was left with not being able to add another user name to my Microsoft Account settings...

I'm not sure why I have to insert a temporary password into gmail.com in order to add the gmail address referred to into an Outlook account...nor...do I know how to more properly title the problem (neither does the google specialist apparently).

(I did just learn (tnx ants and glass) that I can insert quotes after the fact which is quite neat!!)

so it's back to how do I complete Steps 1-7 without having Step 3 available?

I'm not sure what this means and what you are trying to accomplish now. I thought your gmail was working as you wanted.

And I have no doubt that they are now on mental health leave.
I was of the understanding that it was all working.

When you get directives:

• Step 1 do this
• Step 2 do that
• Step 3 do the other
• Step 5 enter that ( but I I think I’ll just do this also and change something )
• Step 6 …

It doesn't work.

Why would you need to add another username, what was wrong with “the” username? And isn’t the username your email account? Are you trying to add another account to Outlook?

It wasn't a 'they'. It was a 'him'. And I praised him enough to make it worth his while.

and yes--I'm not only trying to add another account to my Outlook profile, I'm trying to add all my accounts (those Google hasn't decided to retire, to that same Outlook profile, so that I can keep them alive. (oh...and then do it again on my Win10 machine!!)


[but fear not, I have Macrium Reflect. Too bad I can't 'restore' a working Outlook Profile taken from one computer and install it onto another...]

It’s a simple as following the steps as they were given to you with ZERO variation to the process less the username (email address & password) But alas…

Just wait for glasskutter.

Here's the solution (ctsy of glass and you ants, glass for kutter's solution and you for being an annoying sob :)

If you need to supply an app password to your Gmail account and decide to follow the following directions:

1. Sign in to your Google Account.
2. Click Security.
3. Click Select app and choose the app.
4. Click Select device and pick the device you're using.
5. Click Generate.
6. Follow the instructions to enter the app password. The app password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
7. Tap Done.

And find Select app is not available.

Go to Account settings: Your browser is not supported. (this is the link provided in entry 3 of this thread)

I am going to guess that glasskutter told you to do this already. So you finally read her instructions properly, by accident.

In fact, and as she admitted, there was plenty of room (see reply #11) for misunderstanding--even given "following the steps as they were given to you with ZERO variation"

The link itself was not adequate for "100% compliance, and all the pieces of advice I proffered ('comn, how about throwing a few credits my way--I don't have enough time left to make it to Guru...) were pieces of advice I needed to take.

When it comes to communication and use of language in general I subscribe to Claude Shannon's Theory of Communication. All messages contain a degree of Information and a degree of Redundancy. It's the interplay of these two elements that determines how interesting or useful a language can be. (Applied to crossword puzzles: 100% redundancy is useless: there's only 1 answer to every clue; 100% Information is equally useless: every arrangement of letters qualifies as the answer to a clue.)
