There hasn't been a Firefox update on the release channel, which I'm on since February 28, 2023. So I think that can be ruled out.

And I haven't had a Windows update since March 01.

Maybe Google has updated something that doesn't affect Chrome based browsers.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I just restored from a Feb 28th backup.

Now, after CCleaner run... still single height when signed in or out.
It still could be Windows, Firefox or something else.
Or have you isolated the cause?

The only weird thing I noticed recently, was during a CCleaner run.
Normally, if I forget to close Firefox, it will tell me I had to... to run Custom Clean. That's normal.
A day or two ago it told me I had to close EDGE Chromium, which I never use and have blocked in my firewall.

I've NEVER seen that message from CCleaner before.

But keep in mind, that I just restored from a backup, 10 days old.
Whatever caused the fat Google search box, might recur in 6 or 10 or whatever... hours.

Mine too, is and has been single height on all profiles, regardless of whether I was signed in or not, or whether any userChrome.css or userContent.css was active or not. May be the cause is on Google's serving side ?.

Worked up some research this mornin' but couldn't post 'till now. This problem has existed in one form or another since 'bout 2013 (v19.?)

There is some .css code here for a userchrome file and it also mentions flex property How do I alter the size of the web address bar? So I checked about:config and pasted flex property into its search and it came up boolean and two other choices, I clicked on boolean and it came up true, true shows the thin google search field. I went back to about:config and switched it to false with no change, I left it at true.
Does one have to restart FF after an a:c change? I didn't.

You'll see threads about the mike being missing and offer ways to get it back but they don't work, the only thing that does is an extension that needs to added.
Here's one take:
Google doesn't enable that feature in Firefox. They suggest using a different browser if you want that feature...

You could consider using the Windows Voice Typing feature to fill in forms in Firefox:

Use voice typing to talk instead of type on your PC - Microsoft Support

Who was it earlier that said it's a google api and FF wouldn't pay for it, Edwin?

Yeah..., it may be somewhat speculative but, I was investigating the absence of it in another Chromium based browser and the dev gave me that explanation! Seemed logical... 🤷‍♂️

jfi: Generally speaking, on a Google.com page; the height of that Search Field is located in <inline Style Sheet #8> in rule .RNNXgb.
To view it press F12 and select/enable the tab named "{ } Style Editor". This is what that part of the rule looks like on mine:

Code:
<inline Style Sheet #8>

.RNNXgb {
 display:flex;
 z-index:3;
 height:44px;                     <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
 background:#fff;
 border:1px solid #dfe1e5;
 box-shadow:none;
 border-radius:24px;
 margin:0 auto;
 width:638px;
 width:auto;
 max-width:584px;
}

(You can see/hide individual style sheets by clicking on the "Eye" symbols next to the style pages, and click and edit most of the values there to temporarily see the effects - the Google page gets reset after you close that Google page).

To set it permanently, one can use the following sort of code in the userContent.css (not userChrome.css) file to over-ride that particular default value:

I don't know much about changing userContent.css, but somehow managed to get it to work using code based on similar terms elsewhere.
Also, I don't know if that default height value gets dynamically changed according to the System resolution).

userContent.css
Code:
/* this is the userContent.css file */
@-moz-document domain("google.com"){.RNNXgb { height:84px !important; } }

setting the height to 84px.

FFGoogle-84px.png

(ps: This is just for general information, and not to do with the current "glitch" being observed by some users).

Updated code :
userContent.css
Code:
@-moz-document url("https://www.google.com/"){
.a4bIc {
  margin-bottom: -14px
}
}

Judging by all the comments, this problem seems to be hit and miss.
Some have it, some don't. Some have it signed in, and some have it signed out. :unsure:

It does, its just a different way of sayin' it.

Does one have to restart FF after an a:c change?

Yes.
Same for changing anything in the Chrome folder.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
The code that Das 10 posted worked for me. This is in the latest nigtly build of Firefox 113 on Windows 11. The problem doesn't exist on the latest release of Firefox 111.
