I'm not a frequent BIOS updater. Once the box is built and running stable, I really like to leave well enough alone.

I pre-ordered the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 and it's forcing me to update my BIOS for the anti-cheat stuff.

Wish me luck. LOL. I'm only like 14 updates behind.

I play it with a bunch of friends and already bought it. Gotta move forward.

My bios is from 2021 currently. But system has been rock solid stable since day I built it.

Assuming we're discussing your Desktop with the X570 ASUS motherboard...
Be careful, I had a BIOS upgrade break Windows activation.

Specifically, the one with this description... (5201 BIOS in my case)

This BIOS update for Picasso, Raven, Matisse, Vermeer, Renoir, and Cezanne systems includes a critical fTPM firmware upgrade, enhancing security and optimizing game compatibility. Before proceeding, back up your BitLocker recovery key and suspend BitLocker encryption in your operating system to prevent potential boot issues.

And all the subsequent BIOSes were... cumulative.

I believe it was this that broke the activation... "includes a critical fTPM firmware upgrade".
Made MS think I got a new CPU. :/

NOTE: It took a few days for the activation to break.

Ofc, rather than battle with MS I just bought a new product key from Stack Social. $9.97

Just in case... still $9.97

I'd hope that you could re-activate using the Activation Troubleshooter, but that may require that the machine has an MS Account.

(I'm not certain about that.)

I upgraded my bios for the demo and it still didn't work. MSI said my board was end of life and they weren't pushing out another bios for it.

Just curious: does the "anti-cheat" software require something beyond TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot?

Does any BIOS update add firmware TPM, fTPM (AMD) or PTT (Intel)? The only thing I've seen is that some BIOS updates enabled the firmware TPM by default, to ready the motherboard for a Windows 11 install.

My X570 HERO build is in pieces right now but I can well imagine that it will need a few BIOS updates when I finally put it back together. Often times you can just jump ahead to the latest non-beta update. I'd try that first. If that one fails then you will likely have to do it step-by-step like I did with my X299. Usually flashing the BIOS isn't a big deal these days. I wouldn't worry about it much.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

I'd hope that you could re-activate using the Activation Troubleshooter, but that may require that the machine has an MS Account.

(I'm not certain about that.)

I have an MS account but it's not tied to my Win 11 install, which has a local account.
I believe that was the issue.
Also, in my case, the activation troubleshooter didn't help. Probably for the same reason.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Just curious: does the "anti-cheat" software require something beyond TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot?

Does any BIOS update add firmware TPM, fTPM (AMD) or PTT (Intel)? The only thing I've seen is that some BIOS updates enabled the firmware TPM by default, to ready the motherboard for a Windows 11 install.
This is what i have found

If I understand correctly, you cannot play any game using anti-cheat technology without TPM and Secure Boot? Thanks God I only play casual games without demanding new hardware or an expensive graphics card.

Just some games released over the last couple of years. Many games use anti-cheat that does not require TPM or secure boot. But those requirements are becoming more common on new releases. Older versions of Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc, use anti-cheat tech that doesn't require it.
