Did anyone come up with a workable solution to get rid of this? I tried a couple of posted tricks, which didn't work. I still have to stare at it everyday I open the update section.

First disable all elements of any third party antivirus. That includes Malwarebytes if you have it. Make sure there are no tasks running in task manager.
See if the updates will apply.

If you have not already tried it, here are some other suggestions to try in no particular order.

Restart Defender service. Search for services. In search result click services app. In the list of services you will find 2 services pertaining to Windows Defender.
Windows Defender Advanced threat Protection
right click>properties>Stop the service. Wait a few seconds and start the service. Make startup type as Automatic.
Then do the same thing for Windows Defender Firewall service.

Run update troubleshooter. Settings>System>troubleshoot>other troubleshooter>Windows Update>RUN

Reset Update Components
using Brink's tutorial Reset Windows Update in Windows 11 Tutorial

Reset Windows Security Reset Windows Security app in Windows 11 Tutorial

Check for file system corruption.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer
(Note-you can follow up with another sfc /scannow command to make sure that dism repaired the files)

What would really do the trick, would be if I could find thw MS source for sending the message that ther is sn update - stop it from there

Most of those suggestions are just general WU solutions (not specific to defender.) I read your post to be that your Defender updates are not applying at all.
For me personally, the only issue I have had with Defender updates is once or twice in Windows Update I would find there would be a Defender definition update downloaded but not installed. I would hit the 'install' button and it installed with no problem. I finally decided to leave these updates alone to see if it would ever automatically install on it's own. I could go back a couple of days later and it would show as installed. It's like it downloads one day and installs the next.

There are definition updates every day. My update history is showing they are installing automatically. Now how much of a delay between download and when Windows installs it, I can't say as the time of installation doesn't show.

1. I am getting defender updates on schedule. I am well aware that they arrive daily, if not more.
2. The update I am being offered is for the antimalware platform. I have received more recent updates, so it is not blocking anything new.
3, It is the message I wish to be rid of, it is superfluous.
4. At the time it first appeared, there was a thread in this forum, concerning the issue, but I cannot find it.

It seems that n , so far, no one has knowledge of the issue. Perhaps it has gone away for most, so I will mark the thread as solved to avoid any more posts.

If your only concern is "seeing" the uninstalled update in Windows update rather than getting the update to apply, you can probably hide it using Microsofts show/hide update tool..
