Has anyone figured out how to disable Edge?

OS
10/11 dual boot
I have set a different default, but just like in W10 I have spent 30 minutes going through every menu removing Edge, and yet if I happen to click the wrong thing in the start menu, Edge opens up, or if you click "More Information" thinking it will open a preinstalled help file, but it opens Edge and Bing. I don't want Edge, I hate Edge, I would rather have my thumb smashed with a hammer than use Edge. I hate Bing worse than I do Edge. Is there no way to keep Edge from opening up?

Happened here since the first install. So I installed Firefox, then run Revo Uninstaller to get rid Edge. There are 2 locations of Edge. One in standard Add/Remove Programs, and the other in Windows Apps. So I have to run Revo twice to clean the leftovers. The last thing to do is to change the default programs.

If you hate Bing and Edge so much, why are you using a Windows OS? I have a similar dislike for Google and Chrome, so I use Bing and Edge on my Surface Pro 7 and iPhone.

I have never really used Edge, always use Firefox or Brave. The new Edge seems OK, simply like Firefox and the sidebar. I did use Internet Explorer back in the day, after Netscape died. I use Firefox on 4 different systems and they stay in sync.

Semper Fi.

Second self made PC - 82 years young and still going (first Windows for me was 3.1)
When I was on WinXP through Win10 (I never used Win8 and 8.1), the first thing that I always do after clean install is to remove IE and added Firefox. The main reason for average user like me is add-ons compatibility. Some moderate users might choose Firefox because it is fully customizable while IE (and now EDGE) is hardcoded. Advanced users later create Tor Browser based on Firefox to enhance their browsing privacy. They don't want MS tracked their browsing activity all the time. When you are using Edge + Bing, you unintentionally telling MS everything because of their tracking and telemetry codes.

By the way, if you don't want it, don't use it, your operating system is your garage and you are the driver + mechanic.

Because I like the rest of Windows. Edge and Bing are just as small part, not the whole thing. I like Chevrolet, but I hated the Cavalier, I refused to drive a Cavalier, that did not mean I could not drive a Blazer, or Malibu. I hope that answers your question, if not let me know and I'll explain further.

Although I haven't used it for Edge, wpd lists Edge as one of the apps that it can remove. I've used wpd to remove other apps and it works well. Just remember, remove in haste, regret at leisure. It can remove the store itself, something you probably don't want to do.

I would be hesitant to even try to remove EDGE, the process may break other things, and being in the IP Dev Channel Microsoft may have a problem with trying that.

I have no problem with Edge, just I don't use it. Mind you if you check the file associations for your default browser some stuff has sneakily been left as Edge, I just changed them to Firefox and Edge doesn't pester me.

agreed, also if you go to Firefox's site and read their compare articles against Edge. They both have the same features, yet they say that Firefox is the superior choice when in fact there appears to be no difference and Mozilla just want you to install Firefox. Also, according to htlm5test, Firefox 92 scores 511 whereas Edge 92 scores 528 so Edge is more compatible and less likely to run into issues rendering websites correctly.

If you hate Bing and Edge so much, why are you using a Windows OS? I have a similar dislike for Google and Chrome, so I use Bing and Edge on my Surface Pro 7 and iPhone.
Because I like the alternative even less than I like Edge and Bing, which is a Mac.

Ummmm, neither Edge nor Bing are necessary to Windows, so if I choose not to use either, it's no skin off Windows' back. Windows gives us choices, that's why we are able to set a default browser/search engine.

I don't like Edge either, so I have Firefox installed and have made it my default. I don't care for Bing either, so I have DuckDuckGo (which doesn't track my every search) set as the Firefox default search engine.

I find that both Windows 10 and Windows 11 perform just fine with the defaults I choose. Yeah, if I run into a "learn more" or similar search, and Edge takes over, it's because the author of whatever I want to look at has made Edge the default and there's not much I can do about it. (Someone correct me if I've come to the wrong conclusion.)

At any rate, I just "grin and bear it" then proceed with what I was doing.

If you hate Bing and Edge so much, why are you using a Windows OS? I have a similar dislike for Google and Chrome, so I use Bing and Edge on my Surface Pro 7 and iPhone.

See below. Additionally, I prefer choice. If I buy a SL 55 AMG and it came with, say, Goodyear Eagle tires, that doesn't mean I hate Mercedes when I swap over to different tires. It means I prefer those tires. The platform (OS) is still my SL 55 AMG. The small aspect of it, tires for road contact and handling (browser) is what I choose to use.

Independent of each other.

^^^^^^ This.

agreed, also if you go to Firefox's site and read their compare articles against Edge.

So? Chrome will say it is faster. Microsoft will say it is faster. Independent test will say one is faster than another, and one is fastest overall.

But what if it is not speed we're looking for? What if I bought my SL 55 AMG, not because it is a supercharged 5.0L V8, but because it is a hardtop convertible, that just happens to have a supercharged V8? You're telling me I should buy another car without the convertible hardtop feature that I actually wanted because it also has a V8, but it is 6.7L and thus faster?

Personally, I don't understand why you care what someone else uses.

I can never understand people that comes to a forum and questioning other people's question. This thread started by a question and asking for help. It will be better if we all just try to answer the question, or try to give a help, or at least, share our own experience. In the end, the thread starter will choose which solution could be his best option.

I thank you to all that tried to help others, here and/or everywhere.

Here's the link to Revo,, works just fine and there's a nice free version HTH
Yes, it works, thanks! So does this procedure, although in both cases not all traces are removed. Apps and Features, for example, still lists Edge, and hitting the Windows key and typing Edge will try to launch it and fail. The wpd.app I mentioned before works far less well, possibly because it's removing the old, non-chromium Edge, I dunno.

You're never going to get rid of all of the traces. It's built deeply into Windows and when an update is installed it's going to be back so someone would have to 'remove' it again.

It's just hard to remove..

I firmly believe that Edge is a good browser and performs well.

That said here is a possible way to remove it. Bare in mind that removing Edge might foobar some of your icons.

In 11, enable Windows Subsystem for linux, reboot. Install Ubuntu 20.04 from the store. You will need to get winget packager for this to work.

Once installed try winget uninstall edge. (I have no clue if this would work as I don't wish to remove it).

WinGet is a freely available package for PowerShell.

Is the WSL and Ubuntu needed for the actual uninstallation of Edge? Because it isn't needed for WinGet.....
