Has anyone figured out how to disable Edge?

I simply ignore bing and edge.

I use Chrome for my Browser and Google for my searches - I don't use the start menu to search - I enter the search into my browser directly as It is always open If I accidently click on something that results in bing appearing I simply cut and past the information into a google search in Chrome

I do this because I have always done it and it works for me, Bing search often does not find the things I am looking for so it's pointless for me

There is an app called Edge Deflector that can remove a lot of edges links in the OS to make them work with your Chosen Browser/Search engine but it needs to be re-installed quite regularly as MS continuously change the way the links work

Edit

Edge Deflector - GitHub - da2x/EdgeDeflector: A tiny helper application to force Windows 10 to use your preferred web browser instead of ignoring the setting to promote Microsoft Edge. Only runs for a microsecond when needed.
If you have any issues on Win 11 let the developer know Via the GitHub page

I have to agree with the above, Google search blows Bing out of the water most times, particularly in terms of relevant results.

But I've started distancing myself from Google search, and have started using Duck Duck Go, instead.

I've heard a lot of good things about Brave browser, and in a pinch it, in its default state, is pretty close to my locked-down profile in Firefox Nightly, but I also heard they are starting (or going to be starting / looking into starting) their own search engine as well. I will be very interested in that one, too.

Hi there
Why bother to disable it -- just install another browser -- I like Firefox but there are others - and set that as the default browser, set all the apps that default to using edge to use your other browser e.g pdf files etc, unpin edge from taskbar etc - and forget it.

For search engine DuckDuckgo is as good as any and doesn't collect / store ip addresses etc.

Cheers

In the end, now and then a browser fails to render a web page properly, so having an alternative is always handy. I see little point in removing Edge - it hardly takes space if not used.

However, I dislike Bing as I find it is crap when searching technical sites. Google is far superior in that respect.

So I simply set home page in Edge to open google.

My pet annoyance is that subsequent tabs revert to BING (But It's Not Google).

I actually preferred legacy EDGE as it was much more battery friendly than Edgium.
.
Edge is now ahead of other browers only surpassed by Chrome of course. I think as people buy new pcs, Edge will slowly catch up with Chrome.

Google itself will always outstrip BING (Best Is No Good) because of the android market and virtually synchronisation across devices and OSs.

I normally use Firefox, but see no harm in also having edge and sometimes it comes in useful as the older list of bookmarks has survived, while I didn't quite manage to transfer it all to FF. I am also in the prefer google to Bing crowd, but just leave Bing unused just in case it is needed.

@johnlgalt For this method yes and you will need to be on an insider build of 11 or latest insider of 10 for it to install winget.

You're never going to get rid of all of the traces. It's built deeply into Windows and when an update is installed it's going to be back so someone would have to 'remove' it again.

It's just hard to remove..
Edge like Internet Explorer was, Is as you mentioned built into Windows. If one removes it they might experience problems sometime in the future. I still prefer Firefox as my browser. Because I'm running the just released Insider builds of Windows 11 I decided to go ahead and run the DEV build of Edge. I would suggest to anyone who doesn't like Edge to just select their favorite browser as default and leave Edge installed.

That's what I'm doing and have done all along. I used to use Internet Explorer, but when it started to misbehave, I never even thought of uninstalling it. I just installed Firefox and forgot about IE.

I take a different approach.

I use Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Firefox Nightly, and Brave. I have multiple profiles for Edge and Chrome, and use primarily a single profile each for Nightly, Firefox stable and Brave.

but all links pass through a utility that I have that allows me to pick which browser I want any given link to open in - it's called Browser Chooser 2.

Although it's been a while since Guy worked on it, it still functions pretty much exactly as it should. Through bug reports and suggestions, it's evolved into a mini-protocol handler, as well, so you can not only have a popup in order to select a browser when a URL is triggered to be opened by software, but you can also add sites (domains) to auto open in any particular browser of your choosing, and the same for particular protocols.

It can actually do even more than I use it for, which is just regular link redirection for particular browsers, (and if you close the popup, the link never gets opened - great for those software installers who insist on opening a web page after you've finished installing their software).

I think this catches all but like 2 areas in Windows that still open directly into Edge.

Example popup when a URL is triggered:

71.png

The screenshot makes it look much more plain than it actually is, it usually matches your theme, but upon clicking away from it it loses the theming.

It can be a bit of some flexing to get it working, but it works from any folder you have normal access to, being portable (although it does save settings to your user profile), and, as I said, it's aged a bit - but it works.

As for Bing- I simply remove it from the browsers as an option for a search engine. I've moved from Google to DDG, as DDG has almost the same reliability but 1000x more customizability.

And example DDG search page for 'test':

72.png

I took the Terminal theme for DG search and modified it with some custom colors (which are only slightly different than the ones the them comes with) for better clarity for my eyes.

And this works for me.

I guess I should answer all the "why" questions like this, "just because that's how I want it".

Hey guys, thanks to the everyone that had a productive comment, it is appreciated. I did not intend to start an argument. I won't go into all the reasons I do not like edge, or bing. But I know several people asked why I didn't just leave it and not use it, or they don't search from the start menu, I really don't search for information from the start menu, what I do is, open start, and type the name of the program I want, sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain and I misspell the name of the program, therefor edge and bing open. Of course there are times I search for a program I think I've got, but search doesn't find it, and without thinking I just click "search the web". Then I have to wait for edge to open so I can close it and move on.

If I could just set things so that the browser of my choice would open instead of edge in every instance I wouldn't care, other than Microsoft forcing us to have it on our pc if we don't want it. Just like with the Xbox apps. I don't own a damn xbox, why do I have to have an xbox app on my pc????? The difference is xbox doesn't open up every other day just to prove it can. Basically I wish the government would ban all unnecessary preinstalled programs/apps on pc's and phones. They are making telemarketing phone calls illegal, why not telemarketing apps preloaded on electronics.

I have already opened all the links left in other tabs, so I can check all that out. I do appreciate all the productive answers.

Chris Titus has a procedure to do exactly this. Uninstall Microsoft Edge You can check it out. He has a video on youtube as well. I haven't done it as I don't care as much about removing it.

Although I don't use Edge, I don't want to remove it because it might cause a possible adverse reaction. I wouldn't mind being able to disable it, though. :)

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me for WIN11 with October update. There are also no choices in regedit to change the DWORD value as mentioned in the document. Uninstall Microsoft Edge
