Has anyone removed the Microsoft store?

I just tried to uninstall the Microsoft Store using the command that is posted here (in some place I found it), but the command did not work.

The term 'Remove-Appxpackage' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file,
or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and
try again.

That command is simply a perfunctory cosmetic offering to remove apps, it does little more than just remove an icon (which is why many users complain that following an update, a removed app is back

RevoUninstaller (freeware) is the way to go, using it fully (Advanced option)

But, why remove Store. I love being utterly ruthless in my Windows' window dressing bellsand whistles app destruction, with Revo, but always leave Store, just in case (so far, NEVER had to use it, but I know the moment I do, .... you can guess what's going to happen!!)

Do NOT remove the Microsoft Store.
Sooner or later you will need it and the more completely you removed it, the harder it is to get back.

I removed the MS Store, then needed it one day. I finally got it back in post #26, here...

You can remove it if you want. Easy to reinstall if necessary. You can manually update apps via

You don't even need to do that, because a WinAero or GitHub provided copy of the Store App will be out of date.

Run "wsreset -i" as Administrator, and wait for a few minutes (it takes a while to install any missing packages). This is a common trick to add Store to LTSC editions (which don't include a Store App by default).

Store App is only required for browsing apps from the catalog, or purchasing licensed apps or content. Otherwise you can sideload any app if you know its ProductID, and Windows Update (unless blocked by GPO) will automatically update any installed Store apps for you.

Removing the Store App the right way does no harm.

have seen too many instances of individuals not uninstalling it properly and thus having issues reinstalling it via PS. That’s why I suggested the msix. It’ll update itself when launched and check for app updates anyways.

True. But I've seen people pointing to repo's like GitHub - kkkgo/LTSC-Add-MicrosoftStore: Add Windows Store for LTSC, when those files are over 7 years old. WinAero's archived version is only 4 years old now.

This does become important when users have disabled Store app updates.

This does become important when users have disabled Store app updates.

Good point. I should add that the newest store package and it’s dependencies can be acquired from rg-adguard as well, as an alternative installer to avoid any outdated issues.

I mostly let Microsoft keep Windows updated, mainly as I need to see what my clients see. Also, sections 1 and 2, probably others, seem to impart that things can be set to defaults as the publisher deems as necessary.

I removed the Store a couple of years ago, haven't seen it since, even with an upgrade, Canary or Release.
I don't use Store Apps so, I found it to be completely unnecessary.

Besides, my PC resides in a residential area, it's not zoned for a commercial retail outlet!

If I perform a clean install, the first to go are the Store, Edge, OneDrive and the Web Experience Package.
Doesn't break any functionality that I need, and, it makes my PC a little more Personal!

You should not remove the MS Store, there are many things that come via the MS Store not just UWP Apps, there are things like Applications, Graphics control panels, Elements/features of Windows you may use and so forth.

e.g. I have New Outlook and Thunderbird installed, used daily. Both are in the MS Store. Less used but Diagnostic Data Viewer, WiFi Analyzer are installed via the MS Store.

Essentially, removal sabotages your use of your PC/Laptop, increases workload.

I have MS Store items on manual updates.

Removal is the sort of thing to try on a spare machine that is not being used for any purpose.

Removing / uninstalling Edge could be tricky since it interacts with file explorer - or at least I assume it does.

As for the store - I don't use or need it - any 3rd party apps I install come from the providers web site rather than the Store -- IMO apps from the store often lack full functionality compared with the original Developers version.

I'm not sure though if say installing things like WSL (Subsystem for Linux) / Sandbox etc whether the store is required to install this stuff or whether it can dynamically retrieve data from the developers website directly.

If you can make it work without the store and edge --good luck -- All ears here !! I certainly don't need a lot of the XBOX and that sort of stuff either that seems to get installed by default -- even more silly when it's on a standard Enterprise version of W11.

Remove-Appxpackage is part of the Poweshell Appx module. Yours may be corrupt or missing.

What happens if you enter the command: Import-Module Appx -UseWindowsPowerShell
or just Import-Module Appx

It would appear that at minimum, the Appx Module files are missing or corrupt. The System File Checker should be able to repair things.
Run Command Prompt as administrator, then enter sfc /scannow

Unfortunately, when it comes to powershell, there's not a great deal you can do to fix its installation other that running SFC and DISM.
When they fail to fix things, you likely need to do a repair installation.
