Hasleo Backup Suite


Word of caution - if you exclude folders from a backup, many do not realise if you do a restore, the existing files on the hard drive GET WIPED.

If you do not believe me, create a test folder with a few junk files, make a backup and then do a restore. The junk files will be gone.

I have a long exclusion list for wim capture, about 140 lines.

I think macrium have threatened to add exclusion function at some point.

Depends if the restore includes format as part of the operation. Applying a wim backup won't wipe anything else, however it is advised to rename the existing windows namespace folders before applying. or move them into a folder called something like previous-windows.

It had always been possible to exclude files/folders in Macrium Reflect by adding them to its existing registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToSnapshotMacriumImage
which by default excludes all restore points. With Reflect X you can now exclude files using the Reflect GUI.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Always backups from complete (!) SSD ( Win11 and recovery part. )
Never bothered about exclusions/etc. , never problems after restoring a backup ........
Always checked the backup after creation . :wink:

Hasleo working well in simple pe where it is included in the wim

24H2 pe doesnt like using like using explorer as the shell, so instead I used winxshell augmented with classic shell.

It may be that the options "Exclude system files/folders" and "Exclude hidden files/folders" apply only to file backups, and they are appearing as options in system backups by error.

I have been using Hasleo for a while (after Macrium stopped developing their free version). Is there a way to "truly" make the background services manual? I don't do "scheduled" backups so I'm not sure why there is a need to constantly have the 2 - 3 Hasleo services running. I have switched them to "manual" and Hasleo starts normally, but they stay on even when I close Hasleo. Just curious.

At the current stage of the product... no. It has been discussed with the Devs and they are looking into it. The services are not large and consume very little resources... the problem should be minimal for you as they decide what to do.

There is a natural reticence against apps having permanent services, particularly for Chinese apps. Ok maybe paranoia but......

That may be true of some users, but EasyUEFI/Hasleo has been in business for over 12-yrs and during that time there has never been an incident of the company doing anything nefarious or even phoning home without a reason. That track record should allow for some patience while Hasleo deals with this issue. IMHO.

While you're probably right...but incidents isn't the only metric that should be used. The Chinese government has been very effective at exploiting convenience and inserting itself in products. I'm sure there are companies that have collecting data on users and the environments they live/work in for years and just haven't been caught...i.e. the company has been effective. I have liked using Hasleo (as a replacement for Macrium)...hopefully it is, or continues to be, safe and neutral. On the bright side...the background services seem to be "inactive" when running and app closed...i.e. I'm not seeing any CPU or network activity.

I do use it and I rarely mess around with services as a rule EXCEPT for 3rd party services (even Macrium Reflect) which I always turn off.

There is never really a good reason to have a 3rd party service to start automatically.

If a service is genuinely needed, they should be triggered when running the application.

Similarly, the service should be stopped when the application terminates.

Ok - this does not eliminate risk of any nefarious services but does limit the amount of time such a service is active.

In the end, is all about trust as you intimate.

Eve, Macrium Reflect starts a serice automatically and if not started, you cannot run scheduled tasks (iirc). However, if the service is disabled, you can still do most of Reflect's functions.

If you turn of Hasleo's service, you cannot do anything. None of the other imaging tools do this. So the basic question is why - what is it needed for?

Currently, I turn the service off, and only start when I need to do a Hasleo backup and turn it off when backup is finished.

So whilst I agree with you to give the Hasleo developers some time latitude (they are part of the easyuefi stable and I agree no evidence of nefarious use), I think they should be more open aboute service and what it is used for. This enhances customer confidence in the product.

However, when do we decide Hasleo have had enough time latitude?

Recently (this past Monday), I discovered (during a test) an imaging anomaly when using FAT32 partitions for imaging target storage. Reported it to their support channel... a fix was waiting for me when I woke up the next morning.

This Dev team is amazing... this product is almost worth any investment at this point (y)

I'm sure a MIG-like protection (I've used my own from Excubits for years <no longer available>) will be forthcoming (it's been discussed with the Dev team).
