Hasleo Backup Suite

This has been a very interesting thread. Though I have used Haselo once to create a full image, I do not use it regularly myself. I do , however, recommend Haselo to others who do not want to pay for their imaging app so am trying to be informed about it.

About the "merging" thing, strictly speaking for me and mine, I would never merge using any imaging app; just like I would never use incremental or differential backups. (I probably would if I was in a business but then it would be on the cloud or remote server rather than the 2 backup drives I alternate when I image.) My reason for that is I do not want to keep my backup drive attached all the time.) The integrity of my backups are my primary concern. If I was hacked or infected, then so could be my images. Yes, I know I can password protect my images, but I doubt that would stop a good hacker.

Though one can't assume that any image is 100% valid, the more times that image is messed with the more chance there is that something can go wrong.
and screw up the image.

I'm not one to be paranoid in my computing. I just try to make everything as simple and straight-forward as I can. I've see folks do incremental or differential backups when they do no more than add an ocassional photo they download from Facebook or a recipe. It just makes no sense to me.

I can image the 70gb of data on my system drive in less than 5 minutes. For added peace of mind and to increase my odds, 5 minutes is negligible. Most of my archived data stored on a network drive has 100 gb of data that rarely changes so it gets imaged less often.

Like everything else, it's a personal choice and how sensitive one's data is. What's right for one is not right for the next guy (or gal). The most important thing is that one has a backup plan at all.

Macrium will check all partitions (including a recovery partition of 17 GB + Dell support partition of 2 GB) to 'create an image of the partitions required to backup and restore Windows'. Hasleo will check all partitions less the recovery and Dell support partitions, for a system backup. These operations are set by default and the difference is about 20GB. Since I'm aware of this, when I backup with Macrium I uncheck the 2 partitions which in my context are not needed.
I left defaults on Hasleo and all partitions are checked for backup.

Well, when you request full disk backup that includes all partitions. System backup just those partitions need to BOOT and run OS, If you backup only C: partition and not windows required partitions you can't BOOT from it, so not of much use.
Winretools (Recovery partition)) you can omit but it will be remade during large updates/upgrades like for instance from 23H2 to 24H2. DELLSUPPORT partition is just some bloat from DELL meant for troubleshooting and repairs. It also saves default settings and drivers for particular machine. not needed to run windows.

Not true - you can just select the ones you need. By default it will select all but that is NOT DEEMED NECESSARY.

The bare minimum to backup a working system is the EFI and main C drive.

I beg to differ, although it is really not important after all. When I click to start a system backup with Macrium, I click
'Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows'

They are all check out by default. If I uncheck the recovery and Dell support partitions, when I proceed with the backup procedure a warning notifies me "Backup may not include all required partitions.

It appears as if you are trying to create a backup of the operating system. The current selection may not include all partitions necessary for this. Proceed anyway? Now Hasleo by default excludes the recovery and Dell support partitions...

As I said, it is not important, first we are talking about 20 GB extra wich is not huge nowadays, and second once one knows about it, it is easy to uncheck those partitions, which I do now. Perhaps Macrium should make clear what is really necessary, but I have the feeling that maybe to restore to a different drive one would want to have all partitions transferred.

Does that mean it doesn't remember custom settings like MR does ? It seams normal that when choosing Full disk backup it includes all partitions and System backup just partitions needed for OS to BOOT and work.
On the other hand, if you don't want to include Dell partition you don't care about it so you might want to get rid of it completely as it just takes space. If you have to restore without it being backed up, that partition will not be included and will be lost anyway.
That's how I fixed having some unwanted/extra partitions on disk. Using MR, made backup of just wanted partitions (those "extra" were leftover from Linux installation) and restored such backup to same disk and partitions were gone. Otherwise I would have to handle all that manually, delete, expand and shuffle them.

Ideal. Saved to a drive that is stored offsite from your home. If your house were to burn down (which my sisters did), you would lose your source and your backups in the event of a fire.
I thik if my house burned down I'd have a lot more to worry about than Computer backups / data !!!!!

The sentiment is correct though - multiple backups in different locations.
Cheers

Backup may not include all required partitions.

What does required mean. Those extra partitions are not required for normal functioning of windows. But a user might want them for some oem recovery/testing things.

What does required mean. Those extra partitions are not required for normal functioning of windows. But a user might want them for some oem recovery/testing things.
Unless someone makes some partition there are no "extra" partitions in standard 11 installation. Looking at W110 requirements. It asks for TPM and Secure BOOT. Those have to use bios in UEFI and that has to be in GPT and NTFC file system So Disk as GPT requires one small MBR-Fat32 16MB partition on beginning of disk (even if it's not system disk). for systen to work in UEFI mode, it needs an Fat32 EFI partition 100MB. Windows installon C partition so that's also required to run Windows. That's only one visible with a letter. Those are REQUIRED parttions withoutwindows can't work and so reqiredto be backed up. Windoiws, during installation make also WinRe, recovery partiton which containsdata to revert any update if need be, when update gets rejected for instance. so instead of leaving you straded without OS.it reverts to previous state. You could live with that risk and not use or delete that partition but Windows cobsiders it as required to run. During some larger updates it recreates it again. So they are all required by system and backup programs abide by that and would mark them for backup if you choose only "System backup".

I’m a little vague with my memory on the exact details (version); But when version 5 of Hasleo Backup came out, when opening Hasleo (v4.something) it said it wouldn’t load and that I had to download v5.something.

I found this troubling. Reason being; when Hasleo decides to go subscription (whenever that may be) there is a good chance they will prevent the loading of the version you have installed and force you to upgrade to a subscription version.
As much as I love Hasleo Backup, I certainly didn’t appreciate the prevention of my choosing to stay on an older version.

It hasn’t done that for the last two updates for version 5 but it did happen originally.

I suppose blocking Hasleo from the net, calling home, could possibly solve this.

Blocking won't help, it's a time bomb. They're doing it to keep from having to respond to/support older versions due to their very limited development staff.

That's their official position on the issue...
