Lately I'm having to refresh my desktop after moving a file or saving a file to desktop. Previously the file/etc was there after moving or saving it. Was this because of a recent update? What can I do to solve this?

This problem has existed since the last Century.
It comes & goes of its own accord.
There is no solution.
I've found that rebooting daily helps to avoid it - or, rather, seems to help avoid it.

I wasted a month of my life trying out umpteen suggested solutions to no avail.

having to refresh desktop after saving a file to desktop
Try not to use Save as...
I have a suspicion that Save as... creates some sort temp state of the item.
Use Drag-N-Drop or Download whenever possible...

I never had that problem with Windows 7, but since I installed Windows 11, it happens to me from time to time.

I'll check to see if it happens using the “Save as...” option to save to the desktop.

Saving files or downloading files to the Desktop has been problematic for 3 decades.
Simple answer is not to do it, however convenient it appears to be.

This seems to have been a problem since the implementation of OneDrive in File Explorer. I don't want my files uploaded to the OneDrive (Microsoft) server so I use local account and stay logged out of Microsoft unless I need to log in. OneDrive is still listed as OneDrive Personal at the top of the File Explorer list (e.g. Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, etc.) So how can I get around having OneDrive at the base of the file system configuration. In case this has a bearing on this 'move to' ' save to' 'save as' issue?

But that can often just save the thumb of the image, instead of the target (bigger) image.

Hi,
did you delete / repair the hidden desktop.ini files (two) for the desktop ?
At the end of step 1 of this page, there is a download link to a tool from Ramesh Srinivasan, allowing to reset to default the desktop.ini files for the desktop and other folders. It was written for Windows Vista, but still works fine in Windows 11.
Good luck

Why are you asking?
Are you recommending that the OP does so?
If so, why are you recommending that the OP does so?

It's a proposal, nothing else. I believe to remember that this helped, when I had this problem.
Yes I propose tp try it out !

Altering virtually anything to do with visuals can achieve a temporary respite:
- sodding about with desktop.ini files,
- reinstalling the display driver,
- altering desktop icon display settings,
- sticking your left thumb in your right ear whilst reciting the first verse of Kubla Khan & rebooting,
- ...
