Solved HDD Speed Recommendation?

I have a 4 bay HDD enclosure that I'm going to use to replace the external WD Elements drive that I'm using on my Mini-PC that is being used as a media server. My question is can I save a little money by buying 5400 RPM drives or should I go with 7200 RPM drives?

For Media, it depends how much resolution your streaming and how many people will be streaming at once. If your streaming 4k, go with a faster rpm and a high amount of cache. I also don't like waiting to copy data from one place to another. But you can certainly do less speed to save money if your not doing super crazy quality.

For example I bought this drive for my plex server: (enterprise for dependability)

In addition, consider how well the cooling is for the 4 bay HDD enclosure.

Higher RPM drives will produce more heat.

If the enclosure has a fan, it normally isn't an issue though.

I don't have any 4K media so that won't be a problem. The number of devices accessing the media server will be one or two at a time. Could be three if I decide to stream to my computer in my man-cave. With the setup I have now I'm using a 14TB WD Elements HDD. The drive you posted is in my price range although I would have to buy one drive at a time. I see it's listed as Raid. I won't be using Raid so would that be a problem?

This is the drive bay I have. Amazon.com I bought it last year and now with my WD drive getting close to 70% filled I decided that it's getting close to my needing to setup my drive bay.

Gotcha. I don't use raid either, I just have it all on that one drive. So yeah not necessary for that drive at all. I would recommended those drives if the price doesn't bother you. Great reliability and long lifespan. And they are very fast.

It has a fan on the back, so it shouldn't be an issue with 7200 RPM if you wanted something a bit faster.

The one thing I want to keep to a minimum is buffering and is why I asked about the drive speed. Amazon has a reasonable priced renewed 12 TB Seagate drive for $119.99. I'm thinking about taking a chance an buying two of them. All of my content gets saved to three drives so I don't have to worry about losing anything.

I noticed I nice performance difference on my NAS going from 5400 RPM to 7200 RPM drives.

My major concern would be in getting a drive that was pulled from a server farm. Maybe "refurbished" eliminates that issue.

Crystal Disk Info can provide data like the power-on time for an HDD.

I'd use 7200rpm drives.
You get 5400 you'll probably wish you had 7200.

A 5400 is 25% slower (assuming the same size cache).

I went ahead and bought two of the renewed Seagate drives. A little over what I was going to spend but hopefully they are worth buying.
