HDR

I have been experimenting with this, but am still a bit confused.

Turning HDR on in Windows allows games like Borderlands 3 to run in glorious HDR. The menu to select HDR only appears in the game if HDR is enabled in Windows. The game Destiny 2, on the other hand, operates without Windows being set to HDR.

With an OLED monitor the advice is not to select HDR in Windows unless you are actually displaying HDR content. When I select it, there is a noticeable brightening of the desktop, even using normal content and apps, which is pretty unpleasant when looking at white backgrounds and I guess this brightness is what could damage OLED's.
So, the idea is that you turn HDR on when needed and turn it off at other times. This obviously lends itself more to games that turn HDR on by themselves and turn it off again when they exit. Alas, as I said before, not all games do this.

My question I suppose is to throw this out there and see what others have to say. Is it correct? Is there a better way of doing things? Are the apps to help? Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh, wait, I think I answered my own question. You have to calibrate the HDR and set the SDR brightness.
