What have got to do to have the hibernate option show in the start menu? Please help me asap.

Perhaps needing to turn Hibernate on? Try this:

Press Win + X > choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)
Run the following command:

Powershell: 
powercfg /hibernate on

  • You might have to add it to the Start Menu > check if Hibernate greyed out, in which case it's likely the reason why it's absent.
  • Win key + R > type: control > Open Control Panel
  • Go to: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable" (at top)
  • Under Shutdown settings, check the box for Hibernate
  • Click Save changes

If You Still Don’t See Hibernate
  • Make sure Fast Startup is not disabled by Group Policy
  • Ensure S3 sleep states aren’t blocked by firmware > use powercfg /a in a command prompt or Powershell to list supported sleep states
  • Some laptops may restrict Hibernate in UEFI/BIOS settings; check for a setting like "Hibernate Support" or "Modern Standby".

I now have two laptops with Modern Standby, both are Dell Latitudes. I have been able to get them to hibernate.

The default install of Windows 10/11 on a Modern Standby device does not include Hibernate. It can however be enable by jumping through a few hoops, with the aid of some of Brink's tutorials....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
My problem is now solved, thanks guys.

Since this appears high up in google results, I wanted to specifiy that the "control panel" mentioned is the "hidden one" that looks like it's circa windows XP. So the advice is true, but hides the real difficulty of navigating Windows' web of menus. The quickest way to get to the setting is to search for Edit Power Plan in the start menu. Then, you will be greeted by flashbacks to 15 years ago but also can finally navigate at the top to the "true" backwards to Power Options, then forwards to the "Choose what the Power Buttons Do" (on the left side). This opens the elusive "System Settings" panel where you can enable hibernate by clicking the "change settings that are currently unavailable" button.

It's real, I went through it while writing this up to double-check I got it all right. If you have issues, respond and I'll see if I can do it screenshot by screenshot.

PS. Sorry to necro an old thread, but again, this is what popped up in my search results and didn't want to leave others confused and frustrated by the menu monsters.

Lots of BIOS adjustments, 12900KS and cold plate are lapped but the two P cores next to memory controller can thermal throttle, Titan XP sits at 50-54C at full gaming load, RAM gets a bit toasty, but sustains speeds with some careful tweaking to avoid droop. I use Studio Drivers—workstation as well as gaming rig.
