Solved Home networking support

I was on Public and strange devices randomly appear in my Network. Other computers, modems, tvs, phones, unknown devices. Random each day. I live on a residential street, neighbors not at home all day. My internet provider said set it to Private.
Did the Private setting stop other devices from showing up?

This is what my network looks like in File Explorer. As you can see, except for the desktop I'm using, there are no other computers listed even though they are running and connected to my home network.

Charmaine,

I had not noticed that you were not the OP and might therefore have different requirements.
I am the only user at home on one laptop sharing with ... tablet
If you are just trying to share the internet connection & printer(s) then the other posts about setting it to Public are relevant and my one about setting it to Private is not.

I don't share files and folder between my computers so I don't need the private network setting. That's one reason why I use OneDrive. Plus IMHO, I feel a little safer knowing that my computers don't show under Network in File Explorer. I might even use my laptop at a location that offers free Wi-Fi someday and I won't have to worry about changing the network setting.

You won't have to. The setting applies network-by-network [SSID-by-SSID].
When you connect to a new network for the first time, you will be asked if you want to make it 'Discoverable' [Private] or not [Public].
- My home network is 'Discoverable' [Private] but I chose to make my phone mobile hotspot non-discoverable [Public] because I just use that to connect to the internet.
- Windows remembers each setting individually so I can switch back & forth between them without having to change anything.
- My home network is set to a higher connection priority than the phone's WiFi hotspot so it connects to my home network automatically if it is switched on.

All the best,
Denis

I've only used my smart phones on public Wi-Fi networks and just needed the password. I still feel safer using Public so my computers don't show. If I remember correct, @CharmaineK did say that she only has the one device so I don't see the need for her to use the Private Network setting. I don't know why she is seeing other and unknown devices in File Explorer. I just see the devices that are connected to my home network.

Perhaps we're at slight cross-purposes regarding this part of your response.
I was only referring to Windows behaviour when encountering a new network.
It's just Windows that interrupts with a query about setting it to be Discoverable or not.

Denis

Not really. I was just explaining that I've never used any of my computers on another network. I've only used my smart phones.

I randomly see modems and phones that are not mine. I went into Services and disabled Windows Connect Now

I do occasionally see my two neighbors Wi-Fi's listed as available networks. I'm sure that if they looked they could see my two Wi-Fi networks. I have my main Wi-Fi router and a Wi-Fi extender. We all use passwords so we can't get access. I have never seen their devices listed. :-)

    This is my backup system.
I and most home users do not need their device discoverable.
Don't think that's true nowadays - most homes have more than one computer and many users have both a desktop and a laptop device. Personally, although my laptop is by far the most used, I don't keep any files on it as that's the most susceptible to being stolen, so use a Private home network and keep everything on an ageing heavy desktop in the 'office'. I don't use OneDrive after an accidental deletion deleted stuff on all computers, as it's meant to do, so it was backups to the rescue.

I.ve followed this and now able to see the PC identified as "GARAGE" on my home network, My question how do I share/make visible folders such as documents, files, photos, etc. located on that PC?
