How do I make the vhd created to show in explorer

I do not have any cd dvd drive as shown in the figures in the link. I have ms office iso, but i do not know, how to go about in Storage Section to install the same.....
You can attach the ISO to your VirtualBox VM as a virtual DVD drive. Right-click on the empty Optical Drive in Storage....

virtualbox-add-iso-to-vm-png.30362

If you don't have an Optical Drive listed, then click the 'Add optical drive' icon in the VM's Storage settings. You can use 'Add Disk Image' to select your Office ISO file.

In the VM config -- e.g "Add hardware" add the ISO image as a device as shown by @Bree in the post -- use "image" rather than physical device.

Now after booting up the VM you'll find a CD / DVD device. Then simply open it with file explorer -- just click on the setup.exe file to install the application.

Cheers

Why all the notions to install a VM, instead of learning to convert a legacy 32-bit VBA macro into 64-bit?

You're asking someone to manage two copies of Windows (W11 host, W10 VM), and probably two copies of Office.
I'm assuming the OP knows where his macro lives. How did the rest of the world migrate to 64-bit VBA?

Compatibility between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office
64-bit Visual Basic for Applications overview
How to convert 32 bit VBA code into 64 bit VBA code

If the macro doesn't use a compiled 32-bit plugin, then it's possible to update the variable declarations for 64-bit. I'm not an Office VBA expert, but this question has gotta be easier to ask on the right Office forums, then teach someone how to run a VM.

Hi, garlin, thanks.
I have not asked managing two copies of windows. I have asked only to run ms office older version to run in a virtual box.
The app does not run in windows 11 correctly causing value name na errors.
I know the macro where it lives in the excel file, but could not make it work, leading to all the errors.
Clicking on the excel files open in vba mode of the excel file with compile error.
So, I ask for a solution to run the application, in the virtual box.
Now I think , I made it clear to you , what I want.
Windows 11 clearlyl does not support 2007 ms office version, in which the excel file is for 32 bit.
I am also not an expert in macros.

When I press the start button, after all settings , VM failed to boot and it stops at the screen. When again I press start button in virtual box, it says no boot available system error inside the vm box.
Should I make the older version iso of office, bootable from a usb? so it will boot in vm box when I select Start.
So Just selecting ISO, DOES not allow you to browse menu to select the set up exe is that correct
Or am I missing something.

Yes. You have to install an OS in Virtualbox before you can install an app. A virtual machine is just like any other PC, it needs it's own OS in order to run.

Hi, bree , your idea really helped me. I saw one thread in virtual box, which has not mentioned at all the need to have the OS installed before installing the application . This confused me a lot. Saved time.

1. Please tell me that If i shutdown the OS inside the virtual box, will it reboot to the start screen of the installed virtual box OS, or blank screen. If, it boots to the blank screen, how do i access the OS inside the virtual box to open it, before I opt for closing the virtual box in saved mode.
2. Normally, everybody would install light OS, if it supports the virtual box, and I have chosen the xp. I get, low memory alert inside the OS start screen. I have only one excel files besides the OS and lower version of the office. Why this alert. I was told that the virtual box automatically allots memory and storage size according to the chosen OS by the user.
3. How can I see the allotted memory and storage inside the virtual box . Where are the details tab listing all this .do I have to change the skin of the virtual box to light to see the details as posted in 21 in your reply

1. Restarting OS in a vm is exactly same as if you restart physical machine.

2. What makes you think people normally install old versions like XP. This is totally untrue.

The memory and storage is a parameter set by user when creating virtual machine. If you did not set anything, you probably used default values.

3. See 2 above.

As cereberus says, a VM is just like any other machine. It will boot to the start up screen when you start it.

Your screenshot says that XP is low on Virtual Memory, it is not complaining about the physical RAM available to the VM. This is referring to the size of pagefile.sys on the VM's C: drive. It also says that Windows has automatically increased the size for you, so you will not see that message again.

1678530515471.png

The size of the VM's pagefile can be seen and set (if required) from within the Windows running on the VM, exactly as you would if this was a physical machine.

In the XP VM you can see what RAM it has been allocated in System Properties, the RAM is the bottom line under 'Computer:'. You probably won't need to change the size of RAM VirtualBox provides to the VM, but if you do need to it's in the Settings for the VM, under System > Motherboard.

XP will run quite happily as a VM with only 512K (Virtual) RAM allocated!!! so to get "Not enough Virtual memory" on an XP VM is quite an achievment !!!!!! however running with 1 GB is still better.

Things like Office 2010 (32 bit version of course) run on a 1 GB RAM XP system without any quibbles.

I'm not sure about VBOX but other VM systems allow you to define the maximum Virtual RAM the VM can use and the HOST OS will dynamically allocate it as needed so there is no need to "Scrimp and Save" on defining Virtual RAM for VM's.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi, Bree, I found the details menu inside the settings . I could not edit, as the time has elapsed for my edit the post.
I went inside the network settings and disable the enable network adapter in the VM.
So, I think, that is enough to stop the network adapter and network access for the VM.
Thanks for all the tips

No, a virtual machine is completely separate and independent of the host machine. Think of it as having a second PC. If you want to see a folder in your VM's drive from the host machine, then you'd need to have the VM on the network then set up the VM to share as folder as a network share.
