How do I stop file explorer leaving documents and pictures folders expanded?

Windows 11 Professional (not the cut down rubbish)
If I close file explorer with documents folder and/or pictures folder expanded, it remembers this for then next time I open it. Yet other folders are closed! I don't want this stupidity. Why present me with documents and pictures when I will only need one of them, or maybe music?

Any way to turn this absurdity off? I have to collapse them to find something else.

I’ve never known any version of file explorer to do this in any version of Windows, ever.
Are you running a 3rd party app of some kind?

When you close file explorer, the next time it is opened, it’s opened in a clean state.

Unless there’s a setting I’ve never, ever noticed

In File Explorer settings, make sure "Restore previous folder windows at logon" is not enabled.

Set file explorer to open to THIS PC as apposed to QUICK ACCESS in the file explorer settings

....i'm going out on a limb and assuming you are referencing the Navigation Pane tree....

You can add Home to that list....

It's the navigation pane on the left that does this, it opens in the state you left it when you close Explorer.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Yep, 23H2 did this a little bit. It would remember your OneDrive folder's expansion state, and This PC would start expanded if you left it like that. 24H2 seems to remember a lot more thingies... or maybe that's my imagination.

I set something up to delete the ExpandedState value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\NavPane when Explorer is closed.
