I've bricked a machine before feckin around with the basebrd.dll !!!
Some crazy high permissions with those files, for some reason! 🛑

OK, good to know. I will avoid that. Like you should never mess with shell32.dll because you break the digital signature and system fails to start.

I wonder which/or if Bitmap images are located in the shellboard of the Dev channel.
I just hope the video was helpful and that the replacement of the 3 images does work on 11.

    Using W11 OS on customers' computers more and more often, and sometimes on my mum's new laptop.
In Windows 10 32-bit I am using at work (old installation hard to replace with 64-bit), Resource Hacker sees BMP images in the DLL file. I tried to replace them. Didn't work for some reason, I still see the original image. In Windows 11 Resource Hacker sees PNG images. I replaced them with success. It was just a test. When I have my final images I will post a screenshot.

I also managed to install Mica for everyone. Unfortunately I could not find the right settings to make the Windows Explorer window title color, like other applications (in my case blue background with black text at the menu). It either becomes color bat the menu text and the folders/files text becomes unreadable, or there's no perceptible difference with the new settings. All I want is to make the modern Windows apps, including Explorer have a similar colored theme as the desktop applications. Not the default light grey (for the light theme) with the thin color border. If you can guide me, I would appreciate it.

Success!

I finally found the correct settings to make Windows Explorer have the same color titlebar as all the desktop applications. I didn't touch the Global Settings, I only set the Explorer titlebar color to System and the Backdrop to None. Setting this to None doesn't make the text unreadable. See screenshots below.

Next is to find out how to do that in non-desktop applications. Tried same settings, didn't work. Once successful I'll report again.

PS: The Windows 8.1 style icons you see is because I replaced all system icons with the respective Windows 8.1 icons in C:\Windows\SystemResoucres\imageres.dll.mun using Customizer God. This is discussed here: Using Customizer God to change system icons

PS2: Didn't manage to make Mica for everyone work for other Windows apps, only for Windows Explorer and Microsoft Paint (using the same settings). Any suggestions?

All the customizations combined: OEM custom logo with Winaero Tweaker, the Windows 10 logo replaced with custom Windows 11 logo and the default system icons replaced with Windows 8.1 icons on the Openshell buttons top right. The red close button is due to using the Windows Lite theme. This is the screenshot from my father's computer running Windows 11 in Legacy BIOS (MBR) without Secure Boot, without TPM 2.0

I also changed the logo in C:\Windows\Branding\Basebrd\basebrd.dll which changed the logo in winver tool:

It was mentioned in an earlier post that modifying this file would cause problems. Not if done correctly. Obviously the file is in use by Windows Explorer, so you cannot modify it directly. You have to copy it to another location, such as C:\temp modify it, and then get the necessary access right to replace it. The same procedure as you do to replace the C:\Windows\Branding\Shellbrd\shellbrd.dll file (see earlied posts).

    Using W11 OS on customers' computers more and more often, and sometimes on my mum's new laptop.
Still haven't found how I can change the "traditional" light blue Windows logo when computer is booting. In UEFI installations the default is the motherboard or computer manufacturer logo which can be changed if UEFI firmware provides this option or with special tools. I am talking about the Legacy BIOS installations that by default show a light blue Windows logo with the spinning dots when loading. I want to change this legacy logo with a custom logo. I know it can be done, but haven't found how. I read somewhere that the image is stored in bootres.dll file, but opening that with Resource Hacker had no images at all. If anybody knows where to look, please tell.

Yep, I was able to do that up until Windows 7, but nothing working on latest editions since unfortunately.

With an SSD you see it for a few seconds, but I wouldn't mind if I could modify that. I have already modified the taskbar, start button, start menu, all system icons, OEM logo and "Windows 11" logo at System Properties. If I could also modify the boot logo then there is nothing left to transform my Windows to anything I like.

I was just asking about the boot "animation", in addition to it.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Dev, Beta, and Canary builds as native boot vhdx.
