I heard Microsoft made some new changes in Windows 10 and 11, which enables its users to install android apps on windows without any emulators.

This is still a work in progress, you have the option of running android apps via the "your Phone" app available on the store if not already available, this will allow you to run an emulation of your phone in windows 10 or 11, and run some apps from the desktop.

The Subsystem for android which is a built in emulator for windows 11 is still in late Beta so you would need to be running a DEV build until it is released, with all the related risks.
I use the Your Phone method for running some apps that do dot have a native windows app and it is usable - It's also nice to have Phone generated notifications etc on the PC

There is, as far as I know, not any planned release date for the "Subsystem for android" but it will hopefully be available with the first major Windows 11 update if not sooner

The problem is this is only available to US users - I dont know if just installing a US version of Windows is enough, or if you would need say a VPN to fool it into thinking you are US based or something like that.

I do get irritated by MS's parochial attitude on these initiatives. I cannot see any reason why they need to restrict it to 1 country, or at least widen audience in weaks not months.

Also, the apps you can actually use are a subset of the Amazon android store apps. I have a kindle, and I "hacked" it so it could run google apps like any android tablet.

I do not know if you can sideload apps without more investigation.

I guess, as always, we still cannot expect google and MS to cooperate.

I have an android phone (actually I have three that are still "usable" ), and I also have a number of Android Tablets Two 10" and two 7"

I tend to take a phone and a Tablet with me when out, the 7" is more useful for some trips but I use the 10" as a replacement for a small laptop as I have attached cases with KB and Trackpad, my Laptop is a bit large at 17" screen for quick trips but is a good desktop replacement for longer trips.

I have a number of Wildlife ID guides on the tablets which eases the load from not carrying the Books with me when traveling, my main usage for android on the PC is that there are a lot of household control and security apps that only provide an android or IOS app for using the hardware.

The your phone app allows me to access the android control apps on a bigger screen, although I did use a game player app for a while LD Player that was an emulator that worked fullscreen or windowed as need and worked well, - unfortunately I had some issues with it after windows updates so swapped back to Your Phone.

to be completely honest I have my phone in a wireless charging desktop stand on my desk, so I do not need to have the phone duplicated on to the PC screen, but it can be easier to see and type on on the PC keyboard and 32" 4K Screen

Hi there
I can understand a "limited" roll out first.

It's not always as easy to fix for universal roll out as that by simply offerring it to all insiders or whatever even if it seems to make more sense and yield wider testing. There may still be those legal copyright and intellectual property rights issues - especially with regard to Android which is essentially a Google proprietary App even if based on Linux whereas any pure linux distro is totally 100% open source or at worst still has GNU public license. Irritating I know but for the moment just grit your teeth and use a VPN for those cases where you want to try this stuff out.

The last think Ms wants to get embroiled in is in lengthy often pointless battles in US Courtrooms with armies of high paid lawyers.

Cheers
jimbo

There are workarounds for all the above mentioned "issues".

I run WSA in Windows 11 with Google Play installed on a PC running a i7-2600K CPU, no TPM support in Finland. :winkt:
