Yeah. But those 40" CRTs weighed hundreds of pounds. My 55" OLED sometimes feels small.

True but the environmental damage is there. Old landfills weren't lined and can leach into the ground water. Now landfills have to start out with liners to prevent leaching into the ground water. Back to what I'm trying to say is that very few if any people B*tched about there tubed TVs being made obsolete but they do when their computers are made obsolete. Another thing I just thought about. The ones complaining, do they think that the old computers are going to work forever and a day? There will be a day when the computers will no longer work. Be it today, tomorrow or a few years from now, that computer is going to wind up being recycled. At least I hope they are recycled and not thrown in the trash.

I also remember that because my father had an import company, he was the 2nd person to own a Colour TV in Australia early 1970 (First was his partner). Colour TV wasn’t available here until about 1975
I also remember taking it to my school with my dad so the school could watch some of the Olympics in Montreal, Canada1976, in colour. 600 kids taking it in groups to see it.

I believe if you dispose of them ethically, they get stripped down. We have recycle centres here that are specific for the disposal of electronics.

As I recall, Comcast supplied them for free or free for a limited amount of time. That's if one can call it free. One had to be a Comcast customer to get one.

A lot of our recycle gets used in roads. Glass, old tyres, various plastics.

Annnnnyway… Australians are hoarders. By the time we actually get around to (or are forced to) clear out our ceilings (attic's) basements, garages and sheds, they’d have worked out how to vaporise rubbish or use it in a WMD

And there’s plenty of space on the Moon.

I worked in Public Works for 37+ years full time and 14 years part time. When people bring their electronics to us they get recycled. I think the problem is with commercial trash pickup such as apartment complexes. Trash is in a container and the trucks have the front forks that dumps them and the driver never sees whats in the container. I'm all for recycling. What I don't like is that recycling (in my state and I'm sure other states) went to commingling the recyclable materials. There's no way that I can see how all the recycle materials is actually being separated and recycled.

Yes, regulation is an issue.
If our drivers even see a hint of the wrong waste in our bins after lifting them, like grass cuttings falling out of the wrong bins etc, we get fined. They have mirrors to see the bin being tipped out into the compactor.
Also I believe our trucks can detect weight. So if a home is using bin liners (most break open when emptied anyway), there's not much one can do.

We have a general waste bin, a green (forestry) bin and a recycle bin.

As a TV tech, I didn't miss 300 lb 40" CRT Tvs! But 82" OLED TVs were no fun either

BTW, the analogy of replacing CRT TVs for flat screens doesn't fly. Very few HAD to change. They changed because they needed a new TV, or actually wanted a flat panel. There were 16:9 CRT TVs for HD if people wanted. Very few preferred the CRT TV, it was a matter of affording a new TV

Saying your perfectly good PC has to be replaced or use it insecure is hardly the same

I rather doubt that most PCs in the world today are even using Win 11. I think a larger percentage are still using Win 10 and older operating systems (Linux aside). When Win 11 was first released it put most PCs still running in the 'obsolete' category because most PCs still running at that time would not pass the compatibility test. In fact, some PCs not even three years old were not compliant with Win 11 at that time. Many PCs (such as my own) although having the TPM2 requirement did not have compatible chip sets. Even my own "Windows 11 Ready" PC was rejected after attempting to install 24H2 for this reason. I know that some might disagree with me on this but I definitely did my homework per se being someone who suffered at the brunt end of this non-compliance. To be fair, MS did relax some of these requirements after Win 11 was first introduced as an official retail product.

Myself, I don't give a rats behind anymore about this compliance nonsense. I still have an entertainment PC chugging along just fine on Win 8.1. As long as I have one legitimate Windows 11 PC for my financial transactions and business use I'm still good to go. My network is well protected with a hardware firewall and Kaspersky provides the rest. This may not be a viable approach to the non-compliance problem for everyone but it works for me. No system is 100% safe. Over time I have the option of merging my other PCs with Windows 11 and I have already done so with many of these. Almost all of them won't work with 25H2 and that's fine by me. I don't even want AI on my PC anyway. (Yeah, I know. Fat chance with that.)

That said there's no reason to get caught up in all the melodrama surrounding the Windows 11 fiasco. I can well imagine that Win 12 will be worse. I take solace in the knowledge that Linux is getting better every day.

My route was to buy a "new to me" second hand 10th generation laptop quite cheap When my old laptop packed up. When that packed up (my own fault), I bought an identical model even cheaper! When another identical model came up I got that too, so I have a spare. It's a pretty basic Core i5 laptop but I like it because the ram is upgradeable (and that is quite rare these days). So it is actually affordable to upgrade to Windows 11 without buying a new computer - but additional hassle for people.

As they say, no pain no gain. I tend to forget that most people can't be bothered to take those extra steps. The instant gratification ideology pretty much went viral by the time Gen X entered the forefront. Now it is simply a way of life. Myself, I've learned to slow down fast. In the long run it will save an Eco-conscious individual time, money, and peace of mind. A PC loses its retail value faster than a new vehicle when you drive it off the lot.

I said previously that since I began building PCs in 1990, I never saw a PC benefit from an OS Upgrade. But for the Time, Energy & $ invested, no one ever got a return on that investment. I'm typing from a box I built in 2013 and it does everything I need it to do. Used to be that AutoCAD was responsible for most of my PC budget w/a major part of that being storage. When my kids were young,they never complained getting CAD PCs as hand-me-downs .... they would cost me about $6k to build back in the early 90s. AutoCAD 2D & 3D needs 1 core and, unless you need to do rendering (here want Quaddros) CPU GFX can handle the task.

Our upgrade plans are drive by potential failure concerns more than anything else. I don't think we'll ever see another instance where the new OS (Win 95 was 40% slower than W4WGS. It's very hard to financially justify the time, effort and dollars. Here's another example ... Infoworld reported that corporate America spent from $2500 to $4500 per seat in hardware, software, labor and training moving from W4WGs to Win95. Of course for many if not most of us, it's fun but don't try to convince a bean counter.
