How many of you are running as Admin account on your personal computer?

Local - Admin, everywhere.
Never secondary accounts, I hate that!
You must not have family or friends come by. I wouldn't let any of them use an Admin account.

I use a single Microsoft Account–backed administrator account on all my personal machines. Both of my Windows 11 Pro systems are fully signed in to my Microsoft Account, which is passwordless and protected by Windows Hello. I don’t maintain a separate local account or a split standard/admin setup because my workflow depends on tight integration with Microsoft services, synchronized settings, and mirrored configurations across devices.

My systems are clean, bloat‑free, and locked down through disciplined configuration rather than account separation. I run daily updates, keep Defender as my only real‑time AV, and avoid anything that modifies Windows. Because I’m the only person who uses these machines, an admin account is the most efficient and friction‑free way to operate. Security comes from good practices, not from limiting myself to a standard account.

On a personal pc, I use local admin account along with common sense by not installing any apps from unknown sources and among other things.

I do also do what is called application vetting, meaning I store only the trusted apps on a USB flash drive and that's basically it. This is how most companies do it actually but they do it through tools like Software Center or Company Portal app all of which are pre-approved apps that are safe to install meaning that you cannot install them directly from the internet.

Don't mean to sound like a broken record. But for a managed PC, let users be Standard account. And for personal machines be Admin but BE CAREFUL and use common sense.

I also run Full scans twice a week as well using Defender.

Since a long time ago, I use my main account as a standard one, plus an admin one that I use to elevate though UAC. I also made the UAC popup purposefully difficult to use (having to type both user and password) to prevent me elevating everything with a click, thus thinking twice before each run as admin. Most work don't really requires admin elevantion anyway.
The built-in administrator is left as a last resort for some rescue tasks or heavy management, but sits mostly unused.

I've also tried to put a third account, a standard one that I only use to run the most sensitive and vulnerable programs, for example the browser and mail clients. A bit cumbersome to use, but doable and adds a little more security, an idea I got from Android actually.

My wife uses the same account pair whenever she uses the same computer. I also left an extra account for any visitors that may happen to use the computer (my nephew for example for watching youtube and a game or two).

For a few services I also create dedicated accounts, or use the built-in service accounts. Nothing runs as system if possible.

Of course, every single account is local, nothing should ever be a MS account.

For large businesses, that's a whole other matter. Always and always run your users as Standard accounts. No excuses.

Coming from Windows 95 that the user has full access rights everywhere, I hated the limitations of a standard user account in Windows NT 4.0 when I was at University. So I always use a local Administrator account in all my computers with UAC set to minimum and lots of common sense. Nobody else touches my PC. My son always plays under my supervision and when he will be a little older he will have his own standard user account with my data and video disks locked out of reach and a recent full disk backup, just in case.

That's how we do it. The PC techs are added into Admins after they log on. The effect is they have to enter credentials into UAC, not just click Yes in the consent dialog box. That consent dialog box (the yes/no UAC box) is notoriously useless.

NOC folks, domain admins, people with rights to things in Azure, etc. all have separate accounts for each thing they administer.

If you go online then many attempts may be made to 'touch' your PC.
When our Consumers' Association set up a home network and connected it to the internet, there was an intrusion attempt every minute, and
... with UAC set to minimum ...
you might know nothing about a successful intrusion.

Like I said in other similar threads, hackers are targeting big companies and public organisations. Hardly they try to get into one's personal data. Also I never save my bank account password. I always type the password every time I connect. Same for other sensitive websites.

It's a little hard to justify "the hackers aren't coming after little ol' me" when ransomware help forums are littered with stories from little ol' someones.

You can live in a safe neighborhood or city with a low crime rate, but when crime happens to you, it's kind of a day wrecker.

Win11 Ent. 25H2
It's a little hard to justify "the hackers aren't coming after little ol' me" when ransomware help forums are littered with stories from little ol' someones.

You can live in a safe neighborhood or city with a low crime rate, but when crime happens to you, it's kind of a day wrecker.
Those hit by ransomware are usually less careful when using their computer. They just click on any popup window to close it without reading it. They mostly click on Yes or OK, rarely on No or Cancel. That's why I said I use common sense and everyone else running Windows 11 on unsupported computers should too.

Source? Just conjecture?
Using Windows since 1995, only once I caught a virus because I was visiting a suspicious site. If you are careful enough and keep your antivirus updated you minimize the chances.
