How to check if your Secure Boot certs are updated. (three methods)


I have read this and several other topics on the forum regarding the secure boot certificate updates. The more I read, the more confused my old brain got. I need some help. The information about my 2 systems in My Computer is up to date, especially in the "Other Info" sections at the bottom. I'm starting with my Lenovo T490 (System 1 Specs) because PC Health Check told me it met all Windows 11 requirements. If I can get this laptop updated, then I'll move on to the Lenovo M83 desktop which has unsupported hardware, but was able to be upgraded to Windows 11 using one of the workarounds as explained in System 2 Specs.

Run as Administrator:

Then wait a few minutes, before running the check script.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I ran the powershell command as administrator. There was no acknowledgement after hitting Enter. Is that normal? I'll wait a few minutes before running the check script again. Do I need to reboot during any of these steps? I haven't so far.

Unfortunately, the scheduled task (by design) is silent and provides zero feedback. According to MS, you're supposed to sit there and watch for Events in the Event Viewer. I wouldn't do that. Just run the check script again, and see if new certs were added.

Sometimes the process waits until another Windows reboot to apply other certs.

It's not required for pure Windows users.

But it's included on most newer BIOS in the factory defaults to allow users the option to install Linux without having to mess with self-signed certs.

Microsoft UEFI CA 2023 derives it authority from the same RSA 2021 cert that underpins KEK CA 2023.

Download the EDK2 files provided by MS for inclusion in BIOS images, look at the matching JSON files in the distribution:

It may be that these are old errors. I've had them when running Secure Boot scripts a while ago (if I remember correctly) when the script couldn't access the BIOS since it is an old laptop.

Congrats. In your case, you're done with the CA 2023 cert update phase. Some time in 2026, Windows will revoke the CA 2011 cert as insecure. But that is an optional step at this moment.

One of the reasons for not revoking the cert now is if you have bootable ISO or recovery images on USB. Those probably need their boot files updated, once the 2011 revocation takes place. I'd worry about it next year, and enjoy the holidays.

On my system it took running those four commands a few times before it actually kicked in.
Follow the directions in the first post (below), exactly. Take your time.

I have Windows 11 recovery flash drives and Macrium Reflect Rescue flash drives. Is that what you are saying will have to be recreated next year after the 2011 revocation?

For those media, you copy over the one boot file on them (replacing the CA 2011 version with the CA 2023 version).

I followed the steps in the other thread and got as far as "True" but then the Registry showed NotStarted rather than Updating.
