How to completely remove OneDrive

So, I'm using Windows 11. I like it except I totally dislike One Drive being so intrusive. I don't like there being One Drive Documents folders, for example. I'd like programs to save it's files on my regular ol' documents folder. For example, my games stores saves in the My Games folder in Documents except now, it's One Drive/Documents/My Games. I totally kind of hate it, even though I unlinked and eventually uninstalled one drive.

The problem is, even though I Uninstalled One Drive and deleted the one drive folder in my user folder, my game STILL saves the game in the one drive documents folder and creates new folders to do it. Is there a way to just stop this nonsense? Thanks in advance.

Pending on what game it is... if it's still creating the OneDrive folder location, you may have to uninstall/reinstall the game for it to see that you have uninstalled OneDrive and stop sticking it in there.

Perhaps the culprit is a setting in the game app.

I tried that and it still does it. It's very annoying but I think I'll let it go for now because if it's just one folder and it doesn't affect anything, it isn't so bad, I guess.

Nope, because this game doesn't even have that option. Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster. Good game, but it doesn't even have a v sync option, so I don't expect that.

Perhaps a bit of understanding about OneDrive might help. Use this tutorial to tell OneDrive not to save your Documents, or other files in OneDrive... Turn On or Off OneDrive Folder Backup Syncing Across Windows 11 Devices Tutorial (Option Two, Step 4).

This will place the files back on the local PC and not have them in OneDrive.

I'll look into that. Thanks. I assume I need to install One Drive again to use the tutorial to get it done correctly?

I assume if you've already uninstalled OneDrive and your files are moved back to the local PC then there's no need for the tutorial.

The first thing I do when I install Windows is to uninstall OneDrive. I use a program called HiBit Uninstaller to remove it then get rid of all the remnants left behind. Remember, OneDrive has two entries, one in the programs and features list and another one in the Windows Store apps list. You need to uninstall both.

If you have Windows Pro or higher and have access to the Group Policy Editor, I also go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive and set the below rules to:

Save documents to OneDrive by default = Set it to Disabled
Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage = Set it to enabled
