How To Encrypt A file With A Password

Thank you all again for your replies. I have set 7zip as my default app in Win 11 settings but still no joy. When I double click the 7z archive 7 zip will not launch. Windows is blocking it.

You want 7-Zip File Manager, not 7-Zip Console. If you're browsing for an .exe file for the association, it's the 7zFM one, not the 7z.exe one.

Thank you Edwin. It worked! 7 zip successfully opened the archive with the password. Problem solved.

So the solution was to make 7zip my default programe for opening 7z files. Then use the right click command to open it. Note the right click option did not previously work before making 7zip the default programe.

However, I still don't know why double clicking does not work. The right click option takes longer. ie. Right click/show more options/7zip/Extract archive. Windows 11 has its strange quirks!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the double click option to work?

Thank you all for your helpful replies.

Kind regards
Chris

If you don't see the 7-Zip icon next to an archive file, then Explorer will allow the native Windows ZIP library to open the file. Which doesn't always support the same features as a full ZIP app.

I have set the default app to 7zip file manager anfd now double clicking works! Hooray! Thank you all!

So the simple solution was to make 7zip file Manager the default programe for opening 7z files.

Right click/show more options
In addition to what you just did, you could also disable "Show more options" context menu:

Thanks hdmi for sharing the link. The "Show more options" menu was driving me crazy! I just disabled it using the registry editor and rebooted. Now it works the way I want it to!

One of the things I like about NanaZip is that, unlike 7-Zip, it integrates with the right-click menu (also called the "context menu") of Windows 11. NanaZip also has more than a few additional security improvements that 7-Zip doesn't have. (See the link in my post #22.)

Is that strictly an MSIX Package?

Do all your archives have the generic 7-Zip icon?

Sorry for my late reply.

Hdmi, thanks for suggesting Nana Zip. I will check it out.

Edwin asked..."Do all your archives have the generic 7-Zip icon?".

No, they don't, only the ones I created with 7 Zip which end with the extension .7z. I guess Windows must handle the ones ending in .zip.Although I can still right click and extract with 7 zip.

Kind regards
Chris
