I have a 2TB drive which has OS installed and would like to format to remove OS since I will use only as secondary HD as storage? Can this be done in disk management and how?

thanks

If it has an OS, it should have some small partitions as well. I would delete them all and create a new single partition to take the whole disk.

In Disk Management, right-click on the partition and choose format.
That does not help get rid of the hidden partitions.

Yep, very easy but word of warning - be sure you have selected the correct drive.

I also add following

convert mbr (or gpt if drive > 2TB)
create partition primary
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs quick
assign

One can of course format an unallocated drive from disk management.

DiskPart's clean command will delete all data on target disk, as it was at the factory. Be careful not to accidentally delete your Windows disk! That's why I did not mention it, because it is dangerous. Like using "format c:" in MS-DOS. I had done this stupid error (as I believe many other young guys in the '80s) while I was trying all DOS commands to see what they do. Believe me, it is not funny. Thank goodness all my games were on floppy disks, so I lost only DOS in hard disk. All I had to do is reinstall it from the floppies.

"Clean" on its own will just delete the partitions but not erase the data. If you want all the data erasing (eg if you're planning to sell the drive) then you need use "clean all" instead, which naturally will take some time.

I would assume (no, I'm not going to try!) that if you try to clean the C drive with diskpart within Windows, it might stop you ....

You really don't want to do that on an SSD, there are other ways to secure erase an SSD without wearing it out by writing to every sector. Use the ATA Secure Erase command, or the manufacturer's own utility.

Probably DiskPart could warn you against cleaning the Windows disk, but what if it let's you do it with a simple yes? I would not risk it. For the record "format c:" also asked, and I just replied yes to proceed. "My final knowledge...I wish I had it before", as we say in Greek (I wish I knew before I got into the trap).
