That's great, but I would think that when you install PS 7 that it would be the default. However, I installed PS 7 and I still get PS 5.

Is there some problem using PS 7 as the default? Perhaps older scripts stop running?

Never mind, I see that there are indeed incompatibilities between PS 5 and PS 7. Another masterful stroke by Microsoft!

What you can do is change the default app in Terminal's settings, Startup / Default profile -> PowerShell

Otherwise, there is no such thing as a "default" PS, if you have PS 7 co-installed. You may hate it, but MS wants to you think about which PS you're running.

From a basic commands perspective, they're pretty much the same. But there are PS 5 scripts where you have to know to update them, or just run Windows PowerShell. And there's PS 7 scripts that won't run on PS 5, because of new features that don't exist in PS 5.

Latest PowerShell is "still/also" released by Microsoft - it's not like it's some 3rd party version. So don't get the point of using the outdated version - which comes with Windows, when the latest is still lite (note like Notepad, Paint, Photos or similar Windows apps) - but so much better (in so many ways). That's like - asking to remove the notification to upgrade to Microsoft Edge - while stile using Internet Explorer 11 to browse the internet.

Everyone wants perfect backwards compatibility. In programming world, there's a concept called "bug compatibility".

Languages don't always follow the exact written spec, but everyone's learned to how to get around these problem using a specific workaround. So when you rewrite the language from scratch and actually correct the mistakes, legacy code no longer works.

In another universe, IE 11 might still exist because a large number of websites invested themselves into "IE-only" quirks. Ask the old time web developers. But IE finally got killed off for legitimate security problems with the only thing left being the Trident HTML engine in Edge (for IE11 mode).

And PowerShell really does try to be compatible, letting you use modules from Windows PowerShell a lot of times, for example. But some things just don't work, and whoever is maintaining the script just has to eat it. Such is the exciting world of writing code.

Didn't say he should remove it. I'm aware there's still some OS features, legacy scripts/modules - which explicitly target PowerShell 5.1, since PowerShell 7 uses .NET Core. But i doubt he's using PS for active directory cmdlets, DSC management, scripts dependent of full .NET F. - which are not available in .NET Core or scripts that rely on powershell.exe host and such. Even if it does, same as .NET 3.5, 4, 4.5, or 4.8 - the new/latest version is installed in parallel - so he can still switch if for some reason it gets to that. After all, you can keep both profiles in Windows Terminal and open the one you need. Tho, personally - can't say that i remember the last time PS 5.1 was a requirement.

Well, I switched the default to PS 7, but I know the fallback will be to use PS 5 if something spits out errors. :)

PowerShell Core is not fully downward compatible with 5.1. That's why 5.1 is invoked by default and why you should keep both.
