Solved How to make VLC the DEFAULT media player for mp4 files

I just did this and the mp4 file opened, but there was never any check box to always use this app ....

Also I just uninstalled VLC and its program folder. Then downloaded and reinstalled. Didn't change a thing.

Are you not able to set it from within vlc?

Tools>preferences, then set up associations

Damn!! Forgot all about that. That's what I did for PotPlayer 💡

And I did the same with Windows image viewer program, and all of a sudden Irfanview was the default for images.

Goes to show, when MS wants to shove their own software down your throat, they'll go to any lengths. You have to be devious to get around it.

Now if we can only get Edge to stop taking over everything (I like Edge as a web browser, I want to keep it, but that comes at a cost of limiting other choices for certain things !!!)

Well done, anyway.

Weird. VLC set's to play mp4 by default ok on my laptop without having to remove any other apps. You might want to run the system file checker on your machine.

Now to remove VLC.

Nice! Dang MS, you'd think that we should be able to choose what app WE want to open a file, irregardless of what app is associated with it.

Yes, but how did you do it - did you use VLC to claim the default extensions or did you use Windows Apps settings to set VLC as the default ?

I used the Apps settings. My post #9. VLC's association setting is now defunct.
