I've tried pressing and holding - and tapping the Escape key but this laptop totally ignores it :confused: So I'm left with F10 bios and F9 temp boot order.

I got a kick outta the bleeding tie-dye 'We're getting a few things ready' screen! ;)

I've got the opposite problem. The esc key is so close to the power button my fat fingers sometimes hit both and I get the HP menu.

That's what @Lance1 did on an old laptop that didn't even have a compatible CPU, let alone TPM.
In-Place Upgrade with the leaked Win 11. Success.

I always do fresh installs. Even during the past several years, every 6 months when MS put out updates, I would do a fresh install every 6 months. I might have to do the upgrade, just to get a Digital License for Windows 11, but once that is activated, then I can go back and do the fresh install and the digital license will automatically activate upon connecting to the internet. . Or at least it should. . I haven't had any problems with activation since I upgraded free from Win8 to Win10

That's what I've done for XP, Win 7 and Win 10.
But I think I'm just going to do the In-Place Upgrade this time.

I've kept Windows 10 pretty clean this time (religious use of backups). I have the feeling this is just like moving from...
v1909 to v2004 with just more changes to the GUI.

IF... things are tight and sweet afterwards... I can always do a clean install.

From Insiders Program, yes, but I'm currently on the Win 11 leak.

It failed to install once, with some sort of Data Trap STOP error. I'm trying again. If it fails, I'll whip out Macrium and restore my backup to Win 10 and then install from there.
