I'm a bit younger, but...

I accept that calculators have affected the ability of people to do arithmetic in their heads. That shows up in the inability of checkout clerks to make change without their electronics.

But "algebra, number theory, geometry"? I've never owned a calculator that was of much help with those. But then, those topics, plus ones that involve more advanced mathematics (calculus, differential equations, functions of a complex variable, etc.) are probably of little use to people outside science, engineering, and mathematics.

It's not all bad. My grandson has always been fascinated by numbers. He loved adding up in his head and continually asked us for sums to do. For him it was a game.

He had the use of an iPad since about age 3 or 4. When he discovered it had a calculator he experimented and played with it. By the time he started school he was happy with the concepts of negative numbers and multiplication, subjects he would not start to see at school until a year later.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

When I was in school if the teacher saw us with a calculator, they would take it away and give it back at the end of the day. We had to use the supercomputer called our brain.

Yes, that looks like it should do the job just fine, whatever the type of HDD you're going to pull out of the old PC, 2.5" or 3.5", IDE or SATA. Do you know what type of drive it is yet?

Plug the drive into the adapter, add the adapter's power supply cord if it's a 3.5" drive (they need more power than the usb cable can provide), then plug the usb cable into the PC. If it is in working order and not corrupted you should see it appear as a drive in File Explorer, like any other external usb drive.

If it doesn't appear, open disk management. If the partition(s) all look present and correct, but the largest or only one doesn't have a drive letter assigned, then you can give it one. That is a safe fix you can do for yourself. But if anything doesn't look right (RAW or no partitions, for example) then DO NOTHING except take a screenshot of Disk Management, post it here and wait for Jumanji's help.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

We don't know if the drive is 'sort of dead' yet. There is a high chance that it's still fully functional and uncorrupted.

Should it appear not to be, then I would suggest doing nothing at all until our resident data recovery expert Jumanji has offered advice. He is watching this thread, ready to step in if needed.

Do you need an adapter that handles both SATA and PATA (also known as IDE) drives? I don't know of a downside to getting one that does PATA as well, I admit.

I just keep an old PC around, that has ide and sata ports, no software or adaptors needed. :-)

Well not making much head way, I spent all afternoon trying to free the HDD from its slot without success.

Anyone got any ideas how I get the HDD free of its bay it's loose but something needs .to be done.
