I am wondering if there is a way to remove the language icon from the taskbar. The bit that I have circled in the screenshot below. TIA.

Usually that only shows if you have more than one language pack installed.

For some strange reason I have the English (Australia) AND the English (United Kingdom) installed. But I don't ever recall installing the UK language as I have never lived there. Any idea on how I can remove that?

You can remove a language pack in settings, Time and language, language and region, select the three dots on the language to remove and the option is in the list. Greyed out for me as only one language pack installed.

Yeah I found an option to remove it in advanced settings. The strange thing though was I only had the Australian English language pack installed according to that screen, but the taskbar icon told me otherwise. But it is gone from taskbar now. Still weird though.

Guess it is a newer setting in W11. May be only occurring when you select a different keyboard layout for your primary display language. I for example have English as only display language, but Belgian Comma set as "only" keyboard. I say "only" because it seems you can't remove the default keyboard. To me it feels accidentally confusing and not what they have in mind for this functionality. But in the meantime, enabling good old language bar and then hiding it got rid of the permanent keyboard layout in the tray. Refer to below screenshot with both settings

I used Revo Uninstaller Free to uninstall UK and US Local Experience Packs else the UAC prompt was screwed up. I now just have the Uk configured in Settings and nothing shows on the taskbar.

There are two language bars AFAIR, one pops up for me on some Steam games till I reboot then this PIA one.

I had this and knew I only had UK Eng and it had been bothering me a while (and believe me I tried all the normal options you can find via Google) me a while so I decided to install the US Eng (it was what was appearing as 2nd language in the toolbar), then rebooted then removed US Eng and it has no appeared since.

It doesn't work for me either.
But strangely, selecting "Use the desktop language bar when it is available" removes it for me.

I guess a bug report needs to be submitted.

Thanks for the tip Stigg, I will give it a whirl, I don't really need two languages installed, it's just because one of my pc's has a US keyboard and the other Uk

I guess a bug report needs to be submitted.
That setting is supposed to move the choices of keyboard on to the desktop at the very top. That can be hidden by right clicking it if it shows.

Just like windows 10 the additional keyboard layouts are fairly hidden so no extra language packs are needed to show the layout choices in the notification bar. PITA.

Settings - Time and language - Language and region..

Screenshot_12.png

Then check installed keyboards. I added and then removed US QWERTY as a test and it adds or removes the notification on the taskbar.

That setting is supposed to move the choices of keyboard on to the desktop at the very top. That can be hidden by right clicking it if it shows.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
But I tried that setting, and bang, the language bar is gone. And it's not even on the desktop.

Do you get a different result?

There are lots of little annoying bugs. I guess I should start documenting them.
Like the speaker icon changing to mute after wake from sleep.

Oddly when I had two language packs installed, the UAC prompt text was weird. Problem solved by uninstalling the packs and selecting English (UK) in Settings.

I am wondering if there is a way to remove the language icon from the taskbar. The bit that I have circled in the screenshot below. TIA.

goto setting -> Time & language -> Typing -> advanced keyboard settings
Check the "Use the desktop language bar when it's avaliable" box.

That's one way if the desktop language bar is hidden, otherwise you need to check what keyboards are installed, as my previous post.

It doesn't work for me either.
But strangely, selecting "Use the desktop language bar when it is available" removes it for me.

I guess a bug report needs to be submitted.
Worked a treat. Tks for the heads-up. Looks like Microsoft has problems with the language trying to express what they really mean.

I guess the meaning is in the interpretation of the words " ... when available" .... if there's no other languages available, then it won't appear. Not very explanatory or intuitive. Just another one of MS's weird sense of humour trying to discourage users from changing what MS thinks it knows what everyone wants, so therefore what everyone must have!!
