How to restore false positive from defender ?

Hi

Defender deleted a false positive file . Is there a way to restore ? is there in the future before deleting a file prompt me first ?

Most antivirus programs have a setting for "what to do" if it finds a problem.
I don't use Defender or Malwarebytes, so I can't tell you "where" that setting is... but there are many on here that use both.

As for restoring the false positive... generally the best way is to restore from a backup of Windows, or to restore the file from a copy of the app or program.

Can not find a setting for restore and the file removed from backup drive

No... once the file is deleted... it's gone.

The "setting" I'm referring to should give you options on how you want to deal with files that do get flagged by the antivirus.

For example, in Bitdefender I have these three options...

I make full Windows backups a... lot, so I don't worry about things like this.
But... if I didn't use backup software, I'd set Bitdefender to the "Move to quarantine" option.

Because... most antivirus programs allow you to "restore" the file from quarantine, in the case of false positives.


You could also make an "exception" for that file, then re-download or re-install the file or app.
When you make an "exception" for something in an AV program, the AV just ignores that file or app, in the future.

Every AV program handles things like this, slightly differently.
But they pretty much all have similar methods.

What determined that it was a false positive? What type of infection was it? There's different types of infections, virus, malware, scareware, ransomware, PUPs [Potentially Unwanted Program] and PUAs [Potentially Unwanted Application].

That I can't tell you because I don't use Windows Defender.
But lots and lots of people on here do... so you should get an answer soon. :-)

All I can say is: "It's in there, somewhere".




Mainly, you have two choices with AV programs...

1. Make an "exception" (whitelist), the file or App, so Defender ignores it.
2. Tell Defender to quarantine things it thinks are bad, instead of deleting them.

Place an exception to file before restoring and running the file.

  1. On your Windows device, open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection and then, under Current threats, select Protection history.
  3. If you have a list of items, you can filter on Quarantined Items.
  4. Select an item you want to keep, and choose an action, such as Restore.
Note: Protection History only retains events for two weeks, after which they'll disappear from this page.

No tried several times to check protection history but I did not find any also I dont have the filter button. I am on windows 11 pro

Are you sure it was detected by defender and not another program you may be using? Protection history works for me.....

I see you use malwarebytes....

It also could have been blocked by defender or malwarebytes from downloading. So it would not have been in protection history

Yes malwarebytes history and quarantine is empty because I was placing exclusion on this folder but when detected defender displayed a notification message for me and sound ding then the file no more to be found

hmmm.....not sure then sorry.

Malwarebytes by default takes over the security center, do you have the option unchecked for malwarebytes to not be registered in the security center? If so, that is the only way defender can run alongside malwarebytes, unless periodic scanning is turned on.
