I've got an external 2 bay Raid enclosure currently running as JBOD and I'd like to run Raid 1 to mirror one of the HDD's. One HDD is currently my Macrium backup drive with Macrium images on it and the other is a storage drive. I'd like to mirror the Macrium drive. Once I've deleted all of the data off of the storage drive so it's ready to be a mirror drive how do I go about setting it to Raid 1? When I move the switch to Raid 1 on the enclosure how does it know which drive to mirror? Is this supposed to be setup in software?

@Kol12

The manual seems pretty clear - just enable the RAID switch -- however as the raid software is embedded in the device and not done by the Windows OS then you can only mirror the internal drives on that system (including LVM etc) . A better idea could be to switch the system to Individual disks - so Windows sees 2 Disks and then use Windows Storage spaces to mirror the storage spaces on the two disks or any set of disks you have in the system including those.

I have a 4 disk unit of a similar make but run as separate HDD's which I then set to Software RAID 0 (Mdadm) by the OS I'm running (Linux) as the OS kernel supports software RAID which is pretty good. The speed makes RAID 0 worth while - data is backed up regularly so I'm not worried about losing data. Modern HDD's are quite robust these days -- system has been running almost 24/7 for 2 years without any down time apart from hardware upgrades (swapped 2 disks for bigger ones).

As Windows doesn't have native RAID - you'll have to use Storage spaces to "emulate" Raid functions. It should be fairly OK now on W10 / W11 but was a bit unreliable back in W7 / W8 days though.

Here I've got 2 RAID 0 arrays of 2 HDDs each on the 4 bay device.

dev/md0 - 2X 4GB drives and dev/md127 2X 3GB drives.

You should be able to do similar with Windows Storage spaces

In it's current configuration of JBOD Windows does see it as two individual HDD's. I only want to mirror the two drives. I think my question was - once I enable the RAID switch to RAID 1 what happens exactly?

I suspect that the 2 disks in the device will be mirrored. Can't see any other scenario -- the mirroring should be done by the device's internal hardware. What disks Windows actually sees in that config I've no idea but if logic was anything to go by you should presumably see 1 Disk with half the capacity of the 2 disks combined. I/E if you have 2 X 2TB HDD's Windows would think this is a 1 X 2TB drive -- it doesn't know about the mirroring as that's carried out by the device's hard / firmware. I don't know exactly though.

But how it does know which disk I want to be mirrored?

I'm surprised the manual doesn't go into a lot more detail. Looks like I may need to contact the manufacturer. :cautious:

Be careful, normally when a RAID array is formed all disks are wiped in the process. If there is anything on either of those disks you want to keep then backup the data before switching the device to RAID.
Setting the disks to mirror will not copy disk A to disk B during RAID setup, which is what I think you assume will happen.

Set the hard drive enclosure to just two disks.
Install Karen's Replicator on your computer and set up a "job" which copies the disk with the backups to the other disk.
You can even set a schedule in Karen's.

I've been using Karen's Replicator for 10-15 years maybe.
Here's a pic of one of my "mirror" jobs...

I don't think you get a choice - it just takes the 2 disks in the enclosure and mirrors them. Your Windows system will probably give you a single disk say Disk E.

The device will mirror its 2 disks in its own way. Doesn't matter since all you want is anything written / saved / read from your "Disk E" in Windows to be mirrored which the RAID 1 will do.

Don't worry about which actual "Physical" disk is involved in this stuff. Your "E" drive is being mirrored properly. Forget about bothering which actual physical disk is being used for data and which is its mirror -- maybe bits of both of them in the "Striping" etc. Don't bother -- not a concern.

You only can use the "aggregate" disks in the 2 bay array for RAID 1 -- you can't use other HDD's in your system for this. As I said if you want to use other disks then keep the enclosure as an "Aggregate" single disk via JBODand then define a single or multiple storage space(s) on it and mirror that way via Windows Storage spaces.

Cheers

Yeah it is. :)
Unless you're running a data center, server farm or similar, RAID is pretty much... more trouble than it's worth, IMO.

I'm not getting involved any more in this but automatically backing up directories etc should be done in any case anyway --

RAID 1 offers in flight protection against a disk corruption -- if your disk gets corrupted then the backups won't work probably !!!!!!!

So we'll have to disagree here on this one.

As DigitalGoat posted in post #8, the first thing that is going to happen when you enable the RAID switch is that both drives will be erased.

    Fast!
I'm not getting involved any more in this but automatically backing up directories etc should be done in any case anyway --

RAID 1 offers in flight protection against a disk corruption -- if your disk gets corrupted then the backups won't work probably !!!!!!!

So we'll have to disagree here on this one.

I'd have to see a definitive article, saying that.
I've not seen any information anywhere alluding to anything other than, bad data will be mirrored, just like good data.

I've not seen any information anywhere alluding to anything other than, bad data will be mirrored, just like good data.
The point of mirroring is to also prevent against hardware failures and in many cases HDD's can be "Hot swapped" -- so a bad HDD can be repllace with a new one without stopping the machine and the new mirroring will be done online. This is important if running services where you don't want any down time.. "Conventional backups" can also copy / backup bad / corrupt data too.

Not getting involved any more as you probably haven't understood why RAID of this type is used in the first place --- your original post quotes you as saying you can't see the need for RAID in any case - so it's no point going any further with this topic.

You probably can.
Karen's doesn't make "images", it just copies what's on one drive to another. That's why I use it.

If one of my drives dies... I can just use the other immediately.

I just have Karen's copy the 4TB drive to the 8TB drive...

00000 Hard Drives.png

I use Karen's to run 3 jobs.
It copies any "changes" I make on: F:\, H:\, or I:\ to... J:\, L:\, and M:\
Image1.png

The first "job" on the list, is just my Icewind Dale save folder, which the game insists on storing on the C:\ drive,
even though the game itself is installed on the F:\ drive. That way, if I ever have to do a restore on the C:\ drive,
I still have my latest Icewind Dale save game. :)

I do the backup partitions differently. on G:\ I only keep the two latest backups (one each for Win 10 and Win 11).
On K:\ I keep copies of approx. 3 months worth of backups for Win 10 and Win 11.

This is what works best for ME. You have to come up with your own plan... that works best for YOU. :)

I use ViceVersa PRO . Very good
karens replicator seems similar to ViceVersa PRO . The great advantage is that it's free. Going to give it a try.
