It gets installed automatically and yes I used it to upgrade the bios and a couple of drivers.
Don't have any HPs, but I do have Dell laptops, which come with a similar range of bloatware. After a clean install there's only one OEM utility I'll reinstall, the Dell Power Manager, that one is a GUI to access charging settings that are otherwise only available in the Bios.

As for Bios updates, Dell now provides them to Microsoft and they appear as optional updates in Windows Update.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I don't even get that one back after a clean install, I'll change the bios to adaptive charging and forget about it

HP Support Assistant just sent me this message. Saying my warranty has 122 YEARS left on it - but expires in 1899. Then offers an extended warranty. (It actually expires in April this year). Do you think HP Support Assistant has been hacked?

I did a Fresh install of Windows that got rid of l OEM bloatware on my HP laptop. On two different occasions (months or years apart), I tried installing a couple of these HP softwares, including HP Support Assistant, to check on a few things like battery health, and there was a noticeable difference in performance of my laptop. I don't know what these softwares do. But I have decided I will have none of these any more on my laptop.

I also believe that these softwares could also be used by HP (same holds true for other brands too) as a tool to implement planned obsolescence, i.e. these software can actually cause the hardware to age quickly or otherwise lose performance, forcing you to consider an 'upgrade'.

My laptop is now almost 9 years old and runs wonderfully fast and cool without any of their bloat.

I think you may be right. That one I had was from the software downloads page for my laptop model and the date of the version is Jan 2020. On this page from Jan 2022 - ie last month - (where HP tells you all the long list of vulnerabilities in Support Assistant!) there is a link to version 9. Which I assume is the latest one. Although when I tried to update the installed version, it didn't update so assumed it was the latest one.

I was also incorrect when I said it installed automatically - that was on the original set up before changing drives. After my clean install, I downloaded it from the laptop model drivers page, to update some drivers. Which it did. But now uninstalled!

I just downloaded the latest v9 and it looks exactly the same as the one you've posted above - except for "Support Resources" at the bottom where it only has "Phone". And will now uninstall it again!

I had nothing but trouble with SupportAssist, so it went. There are a lot of other things to go as well like remediations etc.
Go to the Dell support page
I go to the website click "Find drivers" "show downloads for this pc only" and "newest" that will keep your system up to date and do Bios

My machine is now 7 yrs old and they've not updated my drivers/bios since 2019. So I might as well uninstall it myself sometime.
O woe is me - I've been abandoned!!

My machine is a little over 3 years old and has not had new updates for drivers since late 2020, Early 2021. The ones they keep listing as new with a new date on them are just the old drivers with a new date listed. Last Bios update was last year (1.37) which I removed and went back to 1.29 because every Bios update created problems with my battery for some reason. The 1.29 was the only one that would let you revert back. Now no battery problems either.

I actually think it's a good idea - used it on another HP and didn't have issues. Because how often do you actually check to see if you need driver upgrades when it's working fine? So an app that tells you when updates are available and downloads and installs them for you is quite handy. But I don't want it there all the time - if it's had so many vulnerabilities before it is likely to have them again. So maybe I'll just download it once in a while to check for driver upgrades and then uninstall it again.

It really is easy to check and download them yourself. You might create a problem installing and uninstalling just for updated drivers. Just a thought though, may not create a problem. Windows update does still check for driver updates from your manufacturer and would be listed under optional updates if there are any.

Back in 2012 Purchased my AMD Liano Based APU system, first night of setting it up at the time, opened HP support assistant to check for any driver updates or bios updates on Windows 7 at the time, and it showed a bios update, so i let it go ahead and download and install it. Bricked my new machine first night had it--oops lol, cost a bit of money to get that fixed, as that boo boo if i remember right wasn't covered via warranty lol


Fast forward to 2017 when got my HP Omen Gaming Laptop, if it showed a bios update, always went to HP site and got the file and did it manually, last one came via Windows Update Optional update section

So thinking of uninstalling soon HP Support assistant on that PC on the Laptop, it is already not used on the AMD APU Desktop after that incident in 2012

My wife and I both have new HP laptops. Both laptops downloaded the BIOS update without notifying us first. All we got was a noticed that the laptops needed to restart to finish an update. That's when we found out it was a BIOS update from HP and not a Windows update. The laptops updated OK but I do think we should have been given the option to update or not.

Good job you didn't tell me that last week :) One of the first things that came up on this laptop was a bios update needed and I let it go ahead. Thankfully all was fine. I liked that there was a program that could sort it all because it used to be such a fiddle with usb sticks flashing bios and so on. But seems it's not bulletproof!

Back in 2012 Purchased my AMD Liano Based APU system, first night of setting it up at the time, opened HP support assistant to check for any driver updates or bios updates on Windows 7 at the time, and it showed a bios update, so i let it go ahead and download and install it. Bricked my new machine first night had it--oops lol, cost a bit of money to get that fixed, as that boo boo if i remember right wasn't covered via warranty lol


Fast forward to 2017 when got my HP Omen Gaming Laptop, if it showed a bios update, always went to HP site and got the file and did it manually, last one came via Windows Update Optional update section

So thinking of uninstalling soon HP Support assistant on that PC on the Laptop, it is already not used on the AMD APU Desktop after that incident in 2012
That does sound strange. I've found the little question mark icon in the task bar just shows an indicator (like a little 1 or 2) if updates are needed - which prompts you to open the panel and see the updates and it then lets you select to download - then select again which ones you want to download. However there is a settings icon within the app so maybe your settings are for automatic downloads (especially if signed in with HP).

HP Support Assistant just sent me this message. Saying my warranty has 122 YEARS left on it - but expires in 1899. Then offers an extended warranty. (It actually expires in April this year). Do you think HP Support Assistant has been hacked?

I'm getting a little tired of HP's constant reminders that my warranty will expire in April. Pushing me to re-up my warranty four months ahead of time! Gimme a break. Never mind that mess you got! I'd probably do a system restore right fast to get rid of such!

My wife and I both have new HP laptops. Both laptops downloaded the BIOS update without notifying us first. All we got was a noticed that the laptops needed to restart to finish an update. That's when we found out it was a BIOS update from HP and not a Windows update. The laptops updated OK but I do think we should have been given the option to update or not.
Yup. My "less than a year old" HP Intel CPU system just updated my BIOS in the middle of what I was doing at the time. Second time it's happened!

I've updated my BIOS many times the old way; download to flash drive, etc., etc., so this was a shock to my system, not the computer's!

Not to worry, though . . . I've recovered. :eek1:
