I have ground rods too and even my cable is grounded. I also have a device that lets me know every time we get a spike or a surge. We get them every day. In some ways today's computers are better. I wouldn't venture to say they are better in all ways. I've seen PCs that were bricked because someone thought that a simple power bar with "surge protection" was good enough. These were not exactly vintage computers. It is amazing what an electrical storm can do despite having ground rods. Nonetheless user preference prevails. I prefer to err on the side of caution.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

side note, we had a lighting strike a couple hundred feet from my home that blew up a transformer, a huge tree and half a home.. I watched it happen. I worked in electronic engineering and seen what static electricity alone does to components. I agree there is never enough protection.

On holiday a few years ago, there was a lightning strike right in the village where we stayed - I thought it actually went through the house! But it was probably just from the window. It blew every single router in the village and a lot of TV's as well. The only thing that survived was something plugged into an extension cable with a surge protector, which was a nintendo switch. Which our boy was very happy about!

As an update about the P31 firmware. According to someone on reddit (found a post asking the same thing) there has never been any firmware for the 2TB P31. That person emailed them to ask about it. The downloads still fail from that site and there is no firmware listed for the 2TB P31 - only for the 500mb and 1tb versions. You're supposed to just run it out of the box with whichever firmware it came with. This seems odd because Samsung update the firmware fairly regularly!

I've emailed them to suggest it might be reassuring to people if some new firmware was issued for this drive, in the light of the recent issues with KB5063878 - some users of this drive have been affected and some haven't.

The surge protector probably looked rather interesting after that event. I've seen a few fried surge protectors in my day. The thing about a UPS is that it also has surge protection in addition to giving you time to shut down your PC properly in the event of a power outage. Nothing is 100% safe but a UPS will bring you pretty close to that in an electrical storm.

Hold the fort! SK Hynix makes their own silicon. Am I missing something here? Why would Samsung be doing firmware updates for SK Hynix? I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I am aware of this KB5063878 issue but Reddit often has a good deal of misinformation. Clarify please.

Apologies for that, I didn't explain it well. I meant Samsung do fairly regular updates for Samsung drives and was comparing it to the fact Hynix don't seem to do firmware updates :-)

I've had a reply to my email now which says the same thing that the person on Reddit was told. Although I specifically asked if any new firmware would be released after the KB issue.

Response was the P31 2TB is already released with its firmware update so no additional update is required.

In other words. It has firmware when you buy it and there is nothing after that.

Aaah, my bad. This is what I get for responding before my first cup. ;-) I didn't catch the comparison. Yes, Samsung is pretty dedicated that way. This is also one reason I was so impressed with SK Hynix when you first shared the stats on this forum. It would be nice to see Samsung get some solid competition. The performance of that NVMe was outstanding if it is to be believed. Now I suppose the question is whether or not you can get the same level of support that Samsung is known for. Time will tell. Of course, in the meantime, MS may have already dealt with the issue.

I know Kingston does firmware upgrades with their silicon but I don't recommend buying their silicon as they get it from anywhere. Micron, on the other hand, makes their own just like Samsung. Micron has solid support too so it isn't unusual for manufacturers to provide firmware upgrades when applicable. The three major companies that manufacture their own silicon are Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix.

Hi,
If your drive is working properly and you don't experience any problems then you're good to go. As far as I read only some drives were affected with some unreleased firmware. I don't even know how they get it. My Crucial T500 also has Phison controller but works normally - knock on wood 😁.
