Hynix Gold P31 2TB

I've just ordered this. Does anyone currently have one and have any feedback? It's for a slim laptop. The price on Amazon was very good for a 2TB M2 ssd. I currently have a Samsung 970 evo plus in my other laptop and just wondering if I'll notice much difference speed wise. But the Samsung does get quite warm.

Be careful with them. They'll take your arm off!

I can't speak for the P31 2TB, but I have the P41 2TB and it is excellent. Good quality. You'll be good I think.

Looks OK, if the price is right. (I looked at amazon.co.uk, but didn't find it.) It's slightly unusual in that the 2TB version is a tick slower than the 1TB version.

It's here £138.99. The Samsung Evo 970 plus was a similar price (before it went out of stock). The Amazon ad is mislabelled as it says Platinum in the description, but it's not, it's the P31 Gold. It comes up in my order details as P31 Gold.

For me, in the link, the Hynix drive also shows as out of stock.

Not sure what to recommend as an alternative. This spreadsheet lists characteristics of many SSDs. Apparently, the cognoscenti want drives with RAM caches. (The Hynix drive is so equipped.) I'm surprised at the number of drives that lack a DRAM cache. I wonder how important a cache is for most of us?

Not unless you are using a stopwatch to prove there is any difference. Real world usage difference between any of these NVME SSD's will be unnoticeable.

I don't think the link is in it. I updated both my SSDs not long ago and I had to get the
software from the websites. Samsung and Solidigm (for storage)
The link I posted is their official site for software downloads. They also have a data
migration tool that you might make use of.

Strange, it's still showing as in stock for me.

Thanks. It'll be a clean install so I shouldn't need the data migration. I'll make a note of the link.

p31 got great reviews. The standout is low power draw and lower heat than all the others. Much better choice than the samsung 970 evo plus.

SSD are very pricey at the moment. Dont know when or if they will come down again. Seems to be the case with all of them and the sata ssds.

this will give an idea of how they have all gone up over the past month. Proportionately the same increase on the 2 tb. All brands have done the same.



whichever ssd you buy today will cost a lot more than a month ago.

Well, my 990 pro was 199.97 a few months ago and is now 242 something.
This is, it seems like just the beginning. From what I have read, there is a
lack of NAND packages and this will increase as the demand is not subsiding.


I'm glad I upgraded when I did otherwise, I don't think I could if these prices keep their
climb.

I think the price of the Hynix has come down. It was hard to get hold of a year ago when I bought the 1tb (which I haven't actually used because the laptop I got for died). And the 1tb cost more than the 2tb I've just bought. I might sell the 1tb again as I need 2tb drives now. I originally got the 1tb because of good reviews of it running cooler but didn't know if the 2tb performed as well.

It might not have peaked yet, suggestions are further rises. So unless you are prepared for a very long wait, now is likely better than next month

These are the temps for both of my drives as I type and listening to music and three folders opened
with a bunch of background stuff from MS and others
OS drive


Storage drive


And this in a pretty small notebook (compared to my second one) with i9 and RTX 3070Ti.
Even playing games like Sniper Elite 5 or the latest CoD the drives never go over 55*C.
THe Solidigm is the same as the SK Hynix .

solidigm p44 is the same hardware as hynix p41 they are gen4. They have 8 channel controllers. More efficient than other manufacturers 8 channel, but 8 channel nonetheless. Confusingly, there is also a solidigm p41 but it is a different animal QLC DRAM-less, gen4 .

hynix p31 is gen3 and the low power and heat is mainly the result of the 4 channel controller. It is in a different league from all the other disks. Performance matches or exceeds other brands gen3, and the power draw is much lower.
